I purchased all new OEM tie rod ends (they come with tie rods). I did not purchase the drag link so am wondering if anybody has experience rebuilding this and what kit they used. How do you check it to determine it needs rebuilding? This is for a 78 FJ40.

I bought a drag link kit from a now defuct vendor. They go in fairly easily, and is $35 well spent. You can do the 2 cent fix for a while, but nothing beats new.

Check for play at that joint. If you cannot screw it in anymore to take up slack (clean the goo away and you will see a giant flathead screw on the end) you can take it apart, and put a penny on either side of the caps that hold the arm in and reassemble. I did it for many years, then bought a new kit when I did all the steering.

You can get the rebuilt kit from Kurt at CruiserOutfitters.com. Nice guy and good prices. It's an easy rebuild.

Called Kurt and he's out of stock right now. He suggested Mark's.
