1997 Land Cruiser 80K miles.

I had a rear main main seal replaced recently. Since then, I've heard a weird, thin sounding grinding noise when accellerating uphill at 50-60mph. It goes away if the rpm changes.

I first thought it was a belt slipping, but the sound isn't quite right for a belt. i checked them anyway and all is good. I thought maybe a motor mount was loose and the fan was hitting the shroud. Everything is tight. The sound seems to come from the rear of the engine or at the tranny.

I'm thinking torque converter vanes...

Any ideas? :flamingo:

I am now having this same problem after running Miller Jeep trail yesterday. I banged the undercarriage on rocks all day. It seems to only happen to me between 1500-1800 RPM in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. I have not heard it at all above 2nd. Any suggestions????

you might check your exhaust hangers, particularly if you have an aftermarket exhaust. I broke one of the mounts on my Borla cat-back and I have a thin, metallic scratchy-sorta-grinding noise on accel. that is only present at certain RPMs. Very annoying. Not sure how to proceed with getting it fixed. Next weekend.

Is it the snap crackle pop of metallic rice krispies you hear?

Scratchy sorta grinding was pinging in my truck.....retarded the timing, and all is normal again.

How's Miller Jeep Trail these days - sounds like it's gotten a bit beat up this year?

That does sound like an exhaust grind or simply resting against the frame somewhere.

well my wife heard it within 1 minute of driving it  (it is her DD). It just sounds like a hollow metal grind maybe coming from the front drive shaft (feeling from the floor board with my size 15's) Only between the RPM's above. Never heard it past 2nd gear. it is not terribly load at all, but it is def. there.

It was my 1st time on the trail so I can't compare it to the past. I really enjoyed it (would have a lot more if I had a lift:rolleyes: ). The armor I do have was well used. I also got to exercise the lockers some. Hardest trail that I have ever been on (only been on 2 or 3 others though). There were a few areas that I went around that others were able to crawl over without much issue. I thought it was good though, only saw 3 other rigs the entire day. Always fun reading other peoples minds and lips as a Lexus passes them on the trail:D .
