not really sure what I can hold onto... holding the lower shock body doesnt prevent the shaft from spinning and there is a plastic protector on the upper part and nothing to get a firm grip on. Should I remove or cut the plastic protector?

at idle it's about 13V and as it revs up it goes to 17-17.5 just like to dash gauge is indicating. But now overnight the battery has been completely drained (it's new)... not even so much as a dome light will come on.
Strange problem developed yesterday... at idle everything is fine, but as soon as the engine revs the voltage meter pegs high and shortly thereafter the abs light comes on followed by the airbag light. Come to a stop and the voltage goes back to normal and the lights go away. Engine runs fine...

see that step near the opening? I think that might be the inner part of the old ring. New ring wont come close to fitting, no amount of hammering will get it in, it would require trimming the seal
