    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

Hey Glenn, I found that my rack (similar construction to this one) is okay for noise unless I open the sunroof, which of course the 74 doesn't have. I put a wind deflector on mine. Phil will have a boat on his most of the time. Mine is way quieter with the deflector on it though.

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

No, it doesn't extend past the inside face of the bumper, so the crossmember wasn't touched. Also, I welded bolts which go through the upper two holes in the middle of the cross member so its attached there, two on the bottom, and the three bolts at each side of the frame for a total of 10 bolts...

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

I Put on a pulley wheel at the front of the rack so Phil can use the winch to pull the boat onto the rack. When its in for the front bumper next winter I'll be doing the same on the top bar of the bumper. On the ladder I added some 1/2" round bar to increase the area of the step. This makes...

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

Finished! I got the rack done, and its all powder coated and bolted up. I had everything sand blasted, then powder coated with a zinc primer and semi-gloss top coat. This makes for a very durable finish, and it looks great too! All the parts bolt on, using factory holes in the frame, or in...

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

Made some good progress today. The rack is all tacked together. Ready for finish welding, and all the finishing touches like extra gussets, slide for mounting the boat, tie down points etc. The ladder up the side worked out well. I'm going to add something to the rungs to make for a...

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

A totally unrelated project... I recently finished a front bumper for a BJ70. Simple but effective. Just like a 70!

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

For the rack and tube work I'm using a mix of ERW and DOM tube. All 1.75"OD x 0.120" wall. The upper rack is ERW, and some of the other tubing to be added later like ladder rungs. The main uprights are DOM, as its stronger, and stiffer. You can actually feel the difference when bending it...

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

Got the rear bumper mounted up, and the sliders on. The sliders are a 2" x 3" main rail, with 1.75" OD x 0.120" wall DOM tube. I was able to use two of the existing holes in the rear cross member to bolt on the bumper as well as two underneath and 3 at each end. This thing is solid.

    BJ74 EXO/Boat Rack

I'm doing a project for a guy who wanted to be able to put his 12' aluminum fishing boat on the roof to access small fishing lakes instead of dragging it around on a trailer. We didn't want to have a rack relying only on the roof gutters, so its going to be a full length rack mounted to the...

    Builds My HZJ77 Build

Nice build, and I'm particularly impressed with how tidy the turbo install is. When you're down to the coast be sure to drop me a line and swing by to say hi!

Does a snorkel really improve vehicle performance?

I just installed a snorkel on my 80 (1HD-T). Its a little early to say but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing lower EGTs pretty well across the board. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this over some more trips. Any improvement in EGTs makes it worth doing in my book. Also seem to be getting...

Best (and safest) way to fully articulate an axle.

How 'bout getting a rather heavy duty ratchet strap, get the truck close to the bump stops using the ramps/whatever you did before, then wrap the ratchet strap around the frame and axle and see if you can pull it the last bit with that. You'll have to be under the vehicle for this part, so make...

HAD to do it! Had to buy a BJ74 and two BJ73s!

Cool looking rigs, Dave. I'm looking forward to seeing how the builds progress on these rigs, and participating too!

New Cruiser launched around the World !

I was told the other day that the UN buys an average of 5 Land Cruisers a day. Probably lots of them are 70 series too. Cool stuff!

Tires - best size for HZJ77

Another good choice in 255/85R16 is the Cooper ST. I don't have personal experience, but a couple friends have run them with good results. Long wearing and decent in snow.

    73 skidplate sucks?

Good luck in getting one made locally. Really the biggest trick is figuring out the angles to make it clear everything, and maintain a low profile. You can check out the 80 series skid here: (I don't have pics of the 70 series plates up there yet...)Cruisin Off Road Cheers!

    73 skidplate sucks?

Hi Simon, Yeah, the 70 series plate that I've made won't work on your truck. The flat frame rails are more like on an 80, but then there are other differences so that one won't work either. Pretty tough to measure up your truck and get it right from this far away! I don't know if there's...

    73 skidplate sucks?

Hi Simon, I'll take some dimensions and pictures and send them along for you to check. Other thing you could do if your truck has the stock tin skid plate, and you know someone with a 70, 71, 73 or 74, take both plates off and put them on top of each other. If they're the same we're in...
