    Detroit locker 'bench' test?

Awesome, thanks for great info. 1. I just made my Kentucky roots proud, hoisted the axle with the tractor and for leverage mounted an old buckshot pr78. I got the diff to ratchet, one wheel spinning while other was stationary and pinion turned free. 2. I shouldn't have used the word slop up...

    Detroit locker 'bench' test?

Hey folks!! A Question?? I searched here and in hardcore but didn't find anything. I Bought a complete rear axle several years ago including a Detroit locker. The set up had less than 1000 miles. I never mounted it under my 40, so the axle has been sitting patiently in the corner. I...

Buy a BIG project, or save for something better?

Just buy the wife something nice. My agreement with my girlfriend was that if I got my FJ40, she could get a horse, and let me tell you, the pony makes my Land Cruiser look cheap! HAA!! I've got same agreement. Wife is distracted so there's an imbalance right now (oops). Good thing is, you can...

How do I get the winch off?!?!?!

Also did you lok inside the bumper channel? One of my bolts is like that -- had to use a wrench inside the bumber. The left bolt in the photo seems too far left for the winch but hard to tell.

How do I get the winch off?!?!?!

Yes. My belleview winch like the original post attaches with 6 bolts 7/16". There are no nuts, the winch housing is threaded. So use some heat to try to get it unstuck. If you have to cut off the bolt head leave as much bolt as you can so you'll have something to grab later. Tim

    Feb 7, 1975

Yep that too!! The door vin plate shows February 1975. The hose shows feb 7, 75. A bit of consistency there, probably a good bet they were original hoses for the truck. Odometer shows 83k, I always assumed 183k. The pump had definitely been replaced at least once prior to me replacing...

Almost done. The thermostat housing proved difficult as I broke both bolts off. Used a putty knife to separate the halves. Some generous pb blaster, time, and some propane torch to extract the studs. Rreplaced the 2 bolts with new 8x1.25x45. The new oem thermostat from Sam at Lowe is 82degC...

Poking away at water pump replacement...turns out all the radiator hoses were stamped 1975. Hoses were fine, only pulling them to replacce pump with play in shaft. Pretty wild I've driven this thing 25k miles in the last 12 years. Go OEM. Ok back to it... Only broke off one bolt in the...

    Saving The Old Rustbucket--My 1982 FJ40 Tale

i just devoured 21 pages (and some trout slayer), great story. I remember Jeremy lived somewhat close and I got a rush glimpsing that cruiser in our 35/183 hood 10 years ago. I felt like i knew or knew of most cruisers then, I wonder where they all are now!? To think his has gone to Hawaii and...
