fj40 81 spare tire carrier aftermarket replacement?

I have a mostly stock 81 fj40. My tire carrier simply broke in half one day while driving down the road! Bought a 78 version on Mud and did not fit, apparently 81-84 have slightly different bolt pattern. I can't find one one that will fit for less than $1000.. .which is crazy. Are their...

    Spare tire holder fit

Hey guys, I couldn't find this answer on the FAQ or forum search.... although I'm sure its out there! I have an 81 FJ40 and my spare tire holder literally broke in half last week! Found a great replacement from '78 40 but some suggested it wouldn't fit. I was under the impression that the...

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

FYI, for anyone reading this thread in the future, Vintage Air did contact me and stated that they have a new bracket setup for their FJ40 kits so the alternator and the compressor run on different belts, allowing more contact with the waterpump/fan pulley. This should resolve this issue for...

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

sounds good, thanks for the help. If it works it will be a very cheap fix.

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

Well... I'm a little stumped now. First of all, the belt it not inside out :).... I bought the smog pump eliminator pulley from SOR and got two different adjustment brackets for Air/smog pumps for 1981 2Fs. One of the adjustment brackets looks consistent with pics I've seen on Mud. However...

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

Looks like I eventually came to the same conclusion... thanks 73fj40.

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

Agree with water pump, just figured the resistance in the waterpump was minimal compared to the fan. My alternator has a single belt groove so adding another belt to the alternator is not an option. All the replacement alternators are double belt types, but this also changes the setup to a...

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

Thanks GA, only problem is that your setup has another belt so it may not be slipping due to the added tension. I guess I could always add power steering!! Hell of a solution to a slipping belt but a great upgrade! Thanks for the reply buddy.

Belt issue with Vintage Air system

Hey guys, thank in advance for reading. I'm a pretty good home mechanic and done a bunch of upgrades on my 81 fj40... my most recent issue is a simple one and hoping someone out there with a VA A/C can shed some light on! I have original 2F 81 engine without power steering. Installed my...

    Overheating issue...

So after a year of only running the A/c a few minutes at a time... and almost overheating every time, gauge pegged to H, IR temp over 220 on thermostat housing. I decided enough was enough and replaced the radiator. Got a bolt-on replacement from Cruiser Corps, Aluminum champion model. Took 2...

    Overheating issue...

I have replaced the sender with a new OEM and ran it for 20 minutes with a/c in traffic. It was approaching "H". Checked temps and they are 205-215 at top of radiator and at the sensor. I don't trust the hose temps using the infrared thermometer as the top hose temp is reading about 15 deg lower...

    Overheating issue...

So this could be a temper sensor issue if it's gauge is reading "h" at 180. Where should I measure the temp for most accuracy with the infrared(next to sensor?) Maybe I'll replace sensor with OEM (I think used aftermarket) and see if that makes a difference. Thanks. I'll update thread if...

    Overheating issue...

I don't have the brand of fan clutch but when hot it is running at full speed and difficult to turn when engine is off (engaged). Sounds like a damn jet in my garage from all the air movement. Same fan previously used prior to the coolant work and A/C addition and had low temps as previously...

    Overheating issue...

Hey guys, thanks in advance for reading! I've got an '81 40, recently did a bunch of upgrades to make the cruiser more kid friendly as an open cruiser in Florida isn't much fun for kids given 90+ degree weather 9 months of the year and T-storms almost daily! I added a trollhole top, bench...

    Alternator Help

I also bought a three prong alternator that has an external regulator but my vehicle used a two prong with internal regulator and single pulley (81 '40). I cannot find a single pulley alternator in stock anywhere with the internal regulator. Will the double pulley alternator work or will...

    Thermostat Housings

Its a 4 bolt housing... so I guessing that is the late model housing and can't be exchanged for earlier one? I did find the name and part numbers for the "plastic emission" ports on the bottom of the housing with the aid of my manual and some searching. Called Bimetal Vacuum Switch Valve...

    Thermostat Housings

I've got an 81 FJ40. Looks like I've got a pretty bad leak from the lower thermostat housing. Can't tell if its cracked or leaking from emission side ports. If there is no crack, where do I get the plastic emission ports (They are blocked off as I desmogged it a few years ago)? I can't even...
