OEM parts gurus - dimensions/pics of stock rear muffler 1978 2F

I would also love to hear if anyone has had luck sourcing an OEM muffler ('75 or later) lately, as I've scoured the internet to no avail. Thought I had found one at Toyota Parts Overstock, but they emailed to say they couldn't fulfill the order!

Very helpful, @karp68 - thanks! Which one did you end up using, and were/are you happy with it?

    FJ40 Headliner Installation

Lots of great info here, this will be super helpful when I install a new headliner (next month?)! I'd like to ask an old question in a new year: is Cruiser Corps still the way to go for aftermarket headliner? That seemed to be the consensus here originally, but since things can change...can...

    Defrost hose collars????

Pretty sure that's where hoses used to go to the rear heater. I have them capped with ribbed nylon plugs (intended for 1/2" PEX pipe, I think) and hose clamps. As far as I know this hasn't caused any issues. Edit: here's a photo of how mine looks from straight on and from below (so you can see...

    Defrost hose collars????

If I remember correctly, you can get them off and on with the heater in place - but it will probably put some stress on your defrost hoses (due to the bending/twisting required). Not sure if it's easier without the heater - as I recall the heater wasn't really in the way, space was just tight up...

    Engine won’t idle

I recently had a similar issue, was sure the idle solenoid was the problem - but it turned out to be debris in the carb bowl that was blocking the idle fuel circuit. I found the following post in this thread really helpful:

    Defrost hose collars????

I had the same issue and appreciated the ideas in this thread! I found these 2.25" to 2.5" silicone transition couplers, and they fit great: They cost $11 each when I got them.

What is this on my stock '75 FJ40 carb?

    Great, thank you!

What is this on my stock '75 FJ40 carb?

From SOR's carb identifier page it looks like carbs from a few different years have them (but not all consecutive years, and not all federal and/or California...interesting), but most don't. Is it emissions-related? Does it serve any purpose (when the lead is connected) if my vehicle is...

2F smooth then rough, smooth then rough, smooth now rough...

Cleaning out the idle circuit did the trick! Somewhat validating to know I was on the right track most of the time (near/at least somewhat related to the idle solenoid), also humbling to have the root cause be debris (enough of it to clog things up a few different times!) - apparently either...

2F smooth then rough, smooth then rough, smooth now rough...

Just came across this post, where I think (hope) @JAFO2014 nailed my problem and offered the solution: I'm able to back the choke off enough to see fuel spewing out of the venturi, time to pull the carb and find blockage in the idle circuit?!

New good clue, I think: a steady dribble of gas from a syringe straight into the carb barrel definitely smooths out the idle. Must be the carb unless there's a crack in the intake manifold, right? Assuming it's the carb, is it at all likely it's something that will work itself out if I drive...

2F smooth then rough, smooth then rough, smooth now rough...

Good ideas, thank you. I’ve advanced and retarded the timing a bit and didn’t notice a difference in idle quality. My distributor has vacuum retard (I think, I get confused by most things vacuum) and its port is open - this was per advice I got here a while back on vacuum routing. I did stick my...

I did get better vacuum yesterday (18-19, steadier than before), not sure what changed - maybe just a better connection, as I tried to snug up the gauge fittings before checking this time. For anyone following the play-by-play here, the broken rocker stand bolt (that snapped when I was...

Just occurred to me it's possible the debris I noticed in the bottom of my gas can actually came from my FJ40's gas tank. A week or so ago I noticed a slow drip from the gas tank, so I removed the plug to drain the tank so I could apply gasket maker to get a better seal. The gas I drained went...

2F smooth then rough, smooth then rough, smooth now rough...

It's possible this is my problem, or has been part of it. I drained some old gas and put in new gas before my initial startup, but all the gas I've used so far has been from five-gallon cans, and the other day I noticed debris in the bottom of one of them.

No, that doesn't seem to make any difference right now.

Okay, I like this theory. The little boot above the accelerator pump did split into multiple pieces (I replaced it during the rebuild, but that was a couple years ago now and I guess it got brittle!), so debris and/or pieces of the boot itself could definitely have gotten in there. Just hit a...

Does your solenoid have two wires or one? This makes perfect sense for two, but mine just has one and I'm thinking what Curt said must be the case - that my solenoid would just ground through the carb.

Thanks, that makes sense on the solenoid wiring/grounding (mine just has one wire). The o-ring on the old solenoid didn’t appear deteriorated (and the o-ring on the new solenoid looks good), and I did rebuild the carb while the engine was out. Speaking of, it was my first carb rebuild and I’m no...
