That's exactly what I did and it solved my problem. Thank you for the feedback.
I did have to park it outside running for 30 - 40 minutes to burn the oil out of the exhaust system.
It doesn't smoke now, is running great, and the plugs all look the same. I got lucky.
That's a good thought. I guess I could cut the top off with a hacksaw and smooth up the edges with a file.
I agree with what Middlecalf said, I feel like the spring seat needs to be there.
I am hoping someone on here can lead me in the right direction.
I have a 78 FJ45 from Canada with a 2F engine. Production date is March 1978. It is smoking like crazy and is fouling the plug in cylinder 5. It doesn't have any smog equipment and the PCV valve is moving freely.
If I clean the...
That looks like a fun project. If you need any help with the carburetor just let me know. They are pretty simple.
Did that used to belong to a guy that works at NAPA? If so, I'm sort of kicking myself for not checking it out when I heard about it about a year ago. LOL.
I had a similar problem after I painted mine and the problem turned out to be a poor ground for the windshield frame because of the new paint.
You might check to make sure that it has a proper ground.
My 78 2F cam gear has the rubber strip in it and I wasn't aware of it being a potential problem when I installed my new cam.
When I finally got far enough along in my restoration to start the engine it had a knock coming from the timing cover. I had to go half way back into the engine to...
Yeah, I thought about that a while back and verified them to be routed correctly.
The hard lines in the engine compartment on this truck can't get mixed up because the input line is threaded on both ends and the return isn't. But the hard lines under the truck could have been switched.

I'm about to start pulling my hair out here and I need some help!
The engine starts perfect and runs perfect until it warms up (temp guage just past first bar). After that, it will continue to idle perfect as long as you let it, but if you rev it up to about 2K to 2.5K RPM the fuel level in...
Does anyone know if you can still get the rubber or plastic plug for the extra holes in the dash of a 78 FJ40/45? If so, do you know the part number? My local Toyota dealer hasn't been able to figure it out.
The hole is "D" shaped.
Thanks
When I was test fitting my front end I was having pretty much the same issues you are having until I loosened up the bolts where the fenders attach to the frame considerably.
Once they were real loose I could get everything else to line up good. I got everything snugged up while in alignment...
Wadesters,
Are the Toyota letters on the tailgate the decals that I remember reading about someone having made about a year ago? I like them, where did you get them if you don't mind?
Thanks!
That's odd to me. None of the gaskets that I scraped off of either axle were cork. All of them were paper. Some of them were a biatch to scrape off and that is why I started this thread.
I don't know, because I didn't remove the inspection covers on these axles, but it would make more sense...
Yes, it is the knuckle rebuild kit from Toyota plus the gasket for diff to housing. I didn't remove the inspection cover, so I didn't order that gasket.
OK guys, it appears to me that none of the Toyota gaskets that I am about to use are made of cork. Am I missing something, or is someone pulling my leg?
I guess I forgot to mention that this is a disc brake front axle from a '77 FJ40, if that matters. Did I get a wrong part or something?
Thanks.
