Restoring stock fuel system on hacked '79 FJ40

Great stuff guys, thanks for taking the time to respond. Don't know if there is a spacer (I know the part you're referring to), I'll pull the pump off and see. Even with a build date of 12/78 the gas tank is the larger one located under the body, it's one of the reasons I wanted a '79 this time...

Restoring stock fuel system on hacked '79 FJ40

Working on the Enigma Cruiser, trying to get it running. 1979 model, build date 12/78. PO installed an electric fuel pump with poor wiring, I'm removing it to simplify the wiring while I figure it out and because I had no issues with the stock mechanical pump on my other 40. There are 2 steel...

Factory power steering pump to smog pump location on '79 FJ40

Wow, that is one clean looking 2F! Clearly there are more options for doing this with the Saginaw pump than with the Toyota pump. Maybe I need to be more open minded about not keeping the factory pump. The Sag installation does look nice and compact in the photos. Looks like you've done a...

Factory power steering pump to smog pump location on '79 FJ40

Thanks for the great suggestion, I'll drop by the local wrecking yard and see if they have this. I did have it in mind to keep the stock pump but if it proves to be more trouble than its worth I need to entertain alternatives. Or live with it as is, its a battle to keep the belt quiet.

Factory power steering pump to smog pump location on '79 FJ40

Yes, I'm aware of that. My '79 FJ40 is equipped with factory power steering and factory air, I'm not adding it. Meaning the power steering pump is in the upper driver side location. Also means there are 3 V-belts. I particularly don't like the long one linking the alternator and power...

Factory power steering pump to smog pump location on '79 FJ40

Greetings, I would like to move my Toyota factory power steering pump to the smog pump location on my '79 FJ40. And retain the ability of the smog pump mount to tension the belt. I've scoured MUD for information on how to do this, whether its been done. Including the advance search function...

'79 Alternator to Battery Wiring question

Thank guys for the responses. Coolerman, so far I am unable to find the 10ga White/Blue wire coming out of the main engine harness near the battery or the male 7.9mm connector. Apparently the connector was removed along with the fusible link and stock battery cable, see photos below. The wire...

'79 Alternator to Battery Wiring question

Bought a '79 40 with some badly modified wiring (yeah, its the one with all the wire nuts), attempting to return it to stock, make it run. The schematic shows a white with blue stripe wire running to the battery +post from either an external VR or directly from the alternator if equipped with...

Thanks guys, that's just what I was looking for.

70 Series Front Turn Signals on a 40

Found some info searching but not definitive. Has anyone installed these 70 series front turn signal lamps from SOR on the side aprons of a 40? Is the space big enough without modifying/moving the hood latches? Pics are appreciated. My lamps are smashed along with the fenders, at this point...

    What electrical component is this?

Just came in, too dark to continue. Yes, I found Coolerman's list of schematics last night, really appreciate those being there, thank you. It does have factory air and incredibly it works, blows cold air immediately. For the record, I wouldn't use wire nuts on a vehicle, those are all...

    What electrical component is this?

Will do. Thanks for the responses. Clean up is the plan, you don't know the half of it. The cab is just as bad - wire running everywhere, mystery switches that don't work, etc. Trying to trace each one back to its source, see if I can eliminate. But its difficult and I'm not electrically...

    What electrical component is this?

Trying to restore some semblance of the stock wiring to a '79 FJ40 that was badly abused. Looked at a Haynes schematic, I don't see this device. What is it please and what should be connected to each of the 3 terminals?

Looking for Ross, Land Cruiser guy from Albany, Oregon

Some years ago (decades?) there was a fellow in Albany, Oregon named Ross who owned a 4 wheel shop specializing in Land Cruisers. Legend had it he was the inventor of the shackle reversal, he sold kits locally made. He also had nifty items like GM HEI distributors with modified drive gears to...

Preparing 78 FJ40 for sale, looking for some info

Thanks for the input. I guess I will take the advice of not trying to do anything with it other than spot treating the areas I have wire brushed and documenting the tub with photos. That will make my wife happy. Not ready to post for sale yet - need to put the tank back in, get it running...

Preparing 78 FJ40 for sale, looking for some info

Greetings Mudders. With heavy heart I'm preparing my 1978 FJ40 for sale. In the interest of disclosure and believing it to have a solid body I pulled the carpet and fuel tank to check. Original tank in great shape. Passenger side floor in great shape. Drivers side has a couple of areas with...

    16" Wheels for FJ40?

I would like to put 7x16" steel wheels on my '78 FJ40 in order to use the common 10 ply rated 235R16 tire used on 1 ton flatbeds and many 3/4 ton trucks as OEM. We have (2) 1 ton flatbeds and a diesel Ford on our farm as well as 2 military surplus flatbed trailers, all of which use this size...

Need Help! - Can't get FJ40 trans in gear

Hi Guys, thanks fior the replies. CruisinMT - Yes, with engine off the shifter will move freely from gear to gear. Poser/Steve - Interestingly enough my wife asked if it were possible for the clutch to stick to the flywheel. Affirmative, I will remove the cover and check it. I did start it...

Need Help! - Can't get FJ40 trans in gear

After sitting in storage for 2 years my wife and I installed a Weber 32/36 on our '78 FJ40, aka the "Green Latrine", 105K original miles. Plagued by a history of carburetor issues with the stock Aisan it was nothing short of wonderful when the 2F fired up and idled smoother than ever before...
