I'm buttoning up the Lock-Rite installation here in NH this week and not sure if I should continue to run the standard 80W-90 or go heavier. Heavier oil is mentioned in the manual unless the weather is cool. It is already a lot cooler here and most days don't get above the 50's. The winter is...
I fully agree. I'm uneasy at going skinnier than than stated specs and putting pressure against the spacers, and side bearings. Anything that is too tight creates friction, heat and wear. Thankfully, one of my local club's mud mates is sending me over a selection of used washers and a vernier...
For those who want to know more, there are many threads on Lock-Rite, EZ Locker and Aussie Locker and comparisons. If you are considering a lunch box locker, I suggest you search those threads and check the FAQ install by Woodie that pretty much applies to all t brands.
As an example...
I already have the Man-A-Fre flip kit on the front. It made a lot of difference and they do work great. I'm thinking I can pick up another 1/2" or so and have an even a smoother axle bottom. It might be worth a try.
I'm putting a lock rite lunchbox locker in my '78 FJ40. When I originally put it in, the center gap was too wide, close to 3/16 eyeballing with my ruler, that is 4.75mm. It was so wide, the pins barely engaged. Lock-Rite's specs for the gap is 3.68mm - 4.32. I don't have a micrometer, which is...
Maybe an inch or inch and a half if I caulk around the opening where I cut through the housing just below the axle shaft, eh? I'm a bit concerned about going that far with this project. Notching the tubes is too extreme, I just want to be as flush as possible.
I'm interested in the...
Keeping a SOA reasonably low requires the Berlin eyes on the springs you mention, there's an article about it in the current TLCA Magazine. Would probably also require moving the mounts. I'm trying to get by with what I have at the moment without too much modification.
Here in the NE, the...
Not so much looking for the 1/2" lift as a bit more clearance under the springs. SOA requires quite a bit more work, ie different shocks, cut & turn, brake line work, steering, etc. I'm 62. With my 3" lift and 34" tires, hopping in/out of something anything higher than it sits right now would...
I may be dumb, but why is there space between the top of the spring perch and the axle? It looks to me like the spring perch could be mounted flush against the bottom of the axle and gain another 1/2" or so of clearance.
Brad,
I appreciate the heads up and I'm sure other Mud members do as well. That's a real bargain for homeland parts.
So now that we have semi-hijacked the thread, let me add my 2 pennies to the original point of the thread.
I sank my 78 FJ40 for 4 hours once to the top of the radiator...
Brad,
I figured it out. If you go to the website and click on perfornmance parts, they have the exact same list of parts at a higher price that they have when you click on replacement parts. Yours are the replacement and mine are the perfomance. That's why the prefix is different, they must...

Seems odd that they would have 2 different published prices, but this...
