    first 1978 FJ40 rebuild...

Nice rig. I am curious how the Suburban handled towing it. Did you feel underpowered? I am still waiting to get mine on a trailer and tow it with my Sub.

FJ40 Mechanic in the Dallas area?

I would stay away. I took mine to him when I first bought it and he forgot the vaseline. I also wanted some of the extra parts (or those I bought at his direction and did not work), but he "no longer had them." He also disappeared from me when things were not working right. Since then, I...

    Old t-case + newer tranny?

It was actually my brother, but he said it was just at normal speed. Luckily, it was just in the drive way... The cruiser had a high pitched whine whenever under accceleration that would go away as you let off the accelerator. We assumed it was the tcase (hence the spare already) and we were...

    Old t-case + newer tranny?

It is a one piece case. I think the split case came 8/80. I just found out the older t-case is from a 74. Is it possible to swap the finer splined output shaft from the 79 to the 74 t-case? From the picture above, it looks like the rest of the shaft that goes into the main part of the case...

    Old t-case + newer tranny?

Sorry for the vagueness. I have a 79 with stock 4 speed tranny. The spare transfer case is older, but I have no idea how much older. The main difference i havenoticed between the 79 t-case and this other one is that the older one has course splines in output shaft (I think that is what it is...

    Old t-case + newer tranny?

My transfer case exploded last week while pulling out of the drive way. It had been making a loud whining noise , but thought that may have just been normal. Anyway, I have a spare tranny and transfer case from an older rig (don't know year). Will the t-case mate up with the newer tranny...

    Third Member Question

Old thread revival because I did search... I just swapped my rear 3rd member on my 3/79 to 4.10. I already had a 4.10 up front(don't ask). Obviously, the flanges don't match. Is it better to swap the drive shaft flange or the pinion flange? I was going to snag the pinion flange off the...

    REAL TIME Diff gasket help

I am replacing 3rd members now and can't find gasket material wider than 10 inches and the size needed is almost 11 inches. Does anyone reccomend taking the 10 inch and siliconing a piece to make it the right width?

    Real time: transfer stuck?

I had the same problem. Once it was off, I had to beat the heck out of it to free it up. BTW, there is a spring and detent ball in there (mine flew out and was lost when I took it off).

I think only the MTs are discontinued. You can still get ATs in 33x9.5.
