Having just done the oil pan gasket and rear main seal when the transmission was out for a clutch job and transmission/TC replacement, those leaks are pretty easy, technically, to get done if you've got the transmission pulled. Search around here for tips (use OEM gaskets/seals, torque specs...
A little late to the party, but this worked great for me, so I'll share. I used one of the tools shown below to get the shape of the bottom of the transfer case (Orion, but shouldn't matter what it is), then cut a piece of wood to have the same shape and attached it to the top of the...
Thanks, indeed. I'm beginning the tear-down this weekend. Same H41 and Orion going in before Rubithon in June. These videos helped settle the nerves about the rebuild quite a bit.
Just PMd you. I'm in the Portland area and need to get a little more serious about prepping for Rubithon next summer. I can make it through most of the reasonably difficult stuff around here in my 40, but man I'd be a lot more comfortable doing it with lower gearing and power steering. Hit me up...
Yep. I make my own Rod Socks out of bulk net jacket material. You can make 5-6 of them from a spool for about the same price as one or two Rod Socks, and you can make whatever size you want. Works great.
Yep. I think the reel weight might push the side opposite the guides against the top of the tube. Not sure, but that's where the scuffs show up. Purely cosmetic, but annoying. They also get scuffed up from sitting in the slots on my driftboat. Like you said, they're tools, so no big deal. I wipe...
Really? Man, mine scuffs the crap out of the epoxy on the wraps around the guides. I think there's some sort of lining inside the aluminum tubes, but they still get scuffed up.
Lots of good info and tips here. Only tricky problem to solve is to either find the large-pattern steering arms from a later 40 that has the 40-sized tie rod end holes, convert the steering linkage over to 60 TREs and associated stuff, or shim the holes on the 60-sized large-pattern steering...
Just a note on the Rod Vault (and similar) setups. Great protection from breaking, but they scuff the hell out of the rods. I made some rod covers out of nylon net jacket tubing that go over my rods before they go in the vault.
Have you seen the TRXSTLE rod carrier? Adjustable to whatever size...
Douche tubes or not, they're pretty damn handy. I keep my rods whole in the garage, they get moved whole to the tubes (I have the Rod Vault on my 100), then whole to the drift boat. They are a little silly looking, and they're expensive, but I get really sick of breaking rods down and re-rigging...
That's awesome Matt still has the original part. Getting hard to find.
A couple of us scoured the aftermarket world for solid state options if you don't care about factory-original restoration parts. Info on aftermarket parts here, some with varying degrees of plug-and-play. If you need/want a...
I have two hard tops (mostly) from my 1974 FJ40.
Top One: The remnants of the original '74 top that was hit by a tree many years ago. It was sitting upside-down in a field, exposed to Oregon elements for 20+ years and is in not great shape, but it's the original top, and has the original...
Wow. That's a pretty awesome list, until you get down to the price. Yikes. Starting price is almost five times what I paid for my 40, so I'm probably out.
