I respectfully disagree. :) I would never return my 74 Fj40 to drum brakes, manual steering, stock suspension (love my Alcans and Bilstiens), or mechanical fuel pump. Just my 2cents!
FYI... My two year old mechanical pump failed and I was force to use an electrical from the nearest...
I use the Carter P4070, along with a bypass fuel filter, and remote toggle switch. I love it!
If the rig gets stolen, it only drives for 100 yards. Something to think about...
Dang Rick! I hate hearing this! I, along with many here on MUD can relate to your frustration. :bang:
At least its an easy fix! :)
Good luck, and thanks again for the dizzy!
Toyota also advertised 7 people could ride comfortably at 70 mph. Have you ever tried this? :)
I have a 74 40, and converted to disc's on the front, which made a significant difference. I then converted the rear... the two combined, REALLY made a difference! I now feel comfortable in city...
Hopefully Downey will chime in.
I'm about to go the same route as you. From what I've read and remember, Downey recommends a chip from a Chevy S-10 auto. I'm not sure if the Astro Van and S-10 are the same. Perhaps someone here can clarify. I'm following your experience and trying to learn...
I recently rebuilt my entire exhaust and used a Turbo muffler. I was PLEASANTLY surprised how quiet it is! I can hear it at idle. Can't hear it at all when going down the road.
I plan to buy another and put it on the shelf for another project.
Been searching this site , as well as a few others, to no avail. So here it goes...
I have a strong running 1974 F.5. The engine will not stay timed. Here's the history...
I was using a GM dizzy and found the engine would not stay timed. I replaced the GM unit with a new Trollhole dizzy...
A friend and I were talking a few months ago about doing this exact thing.... Restore a 4Runner, and leave it and camp gear, in a secured storage facility in Aurora, a 20 minute cab drive from the Denver airport. Leave Lafayette, Louisiana in the morning and camp near Vail pass in the evening. :)
The knuckles are installed correctly. We rebuilt one knuckle at a time... pretty hard to screw that up.
I readjusted the passenger side wheel bearing preload. This helped! However, I'm concerned I may have too much load on the bearing. Now, there is no play in the wheel... When putting a hand...
Thanks for chiming in! Yes, the top of the tires lean outward.
I put a a hand on top and bottom of tire... It would move back and forth a bit. The passenger side moved more than drivers side.
I have the wheel off now, going to retorq the wheel bearing nuts.
Any other advice?
Been researching to no avail...
A friend and I rebuilt the knuckles and replaced tre's on my 74 40, with disc brake conversion. All went well until we put the tires on...
The top of the passenger tire leans out approximately 3/4". The drivers side leans out 1/2".
What did I screw up? Any...
74 and earlier wiper motors can be shipped to Cardone for a rebuild, https://www.cardone.com/find-parts/vehicle-parts-listing?make=Toyota%20Trucks&model=Land%20Cruiser&year=1974.
I bought one off ebay and plan to ship it to them via Car Quest. I exchanged emails with Cardone. You must ship...
ErikinSC, I'm in the process of rebuilding a 79 2F utilizing a 74 F.5 head. I've read here on MUD to expect 180 - 195 compression numbers... this is what I'm shooting for... 9.0-9.5 compression. ;)
GA, I may be driving through your area in June to attend a Fast Attack Submarine reunion in...
No offense... but I obviously didn't buy a 40 to save money, go fast, or worry about mileage.
I had a 300 I6 in a Ford pickup, in the early 80's as a teenager. I loved it then, and love it now.
Good idea, but if I go Chevy on my next project (40 on a 62 frame) it will be a Vortec.
Has anyone installed a Ford 300 I6 in a 40? I've been searching to no avail... Surely someone has done this.
I agree with Coolerman... I've often thought of utilizing a Ford 300 I6. Will the 300 I6 fit (without hacking up the engine bay)? Or is it too long?
I'm VERY interested in this for an upcoming project.
