From the parts in that pic, I have a good idea of what you are about to attempt, but I didn't know you could weld aluminum. Of course, even if you can't, I'm sure you will learn in about 10 minutes flat. I'm staying tuned....been thinking about a similar project myself, but I would have to...
that looks just like mine. the lock part is actually critical to making the unit work. Without the lock, you can pop the bolt backwards and the carrier will drop. The nut on the bottom of that bolt is really just for setting the height, but you would never really loosen it on a regular basis...
Mine were in good shape, but I replaced them all anyway. There was paint on the outer most edge of the original rubber and I didn't feel like cleaning it off. I actually bought the replacements years and years ago, so I have no idea if they are still available.
It's pretty "original", and definitely original in terms of the body. The seat covers were shot, the floor mats were missing (if there ever were any) etc. Wayne is correct in calling this a resofication and not a restoration. It is not a restoration because it has aftermarket bug vent seals...
Thanks Wayne, but it's not actually listed for sale anywhere anyway. I'm really enjoying driving it at the moment, and I'm sure I would miss it even if I did get my "total investment" from someone who couldn't stand to be without it. Heck, I don't even know how many hours I have in it right...
new camera
Still getting used to the new camera. White is particularly hard to shoot in full sun light. In fact, nearly all of these are overexposed. Oh well. Let's see if I can get the linky to work this time.
Let's find out. What are you willing to spend for it? I'll sell it.....sure don't have to. I took it to a car show two weekends ago. LOTS of interest in the truck, but I'm not advertising it for sale. Reasonable offers will be entertained, but by "reasonable" I don't think anything less...
They actually sandblasted it before the machine work and it came back covered in machine oil. I just degreased it and painted it with a rattle can. It did not come with the seal between the cover plate and the pump, and my formagasket failed. I'll be removing it tomorrow and repainting again...
I used an eary 4-runner hose. I think it came off an IFS 4-runner...maybe 1987? It fit "okay". I found that the gas pump doesn't like it very much because it distorted a little when I forced the connection together. It causes a splash inside that kicks the fuel station pump off.....so you...
I should be buying a digital camera in the next month or so. I will take some detailed shots of it and post those up. I have just been so busy with other projects, this has really slowed to a crawl. Driving it today has motivated me to finish the last little parts. Other than needing a spare...
Instant crowd
What's the quickest way to draw a crowd? Pull up to the gas station in your freshly restored 45! Holy cow....I have never gotten so much attention. I could be driving around with a supermodel in the passenger seat and I don't think anyone would notice her.
Not quite done...
pump pics
It was not exactly a straight up job as we had thought. He had to machine down a cast iron impeller from a flathead ford and then machined the body to accept a heavier shaft. Works well though.
I just got off the phone with a local guy that said $100. I'm going to try to get the pump off this week and get it down to him to see if it can, in fact, be done for that. Will post up what I find.
That's what I was thinking of doing. Do you have the name of the place in Denver? I will be there in a few weeks anyway. I actually tore down one yesterday out of a 74. Not too much to it if you can find the bearing and seal sizes easily enough. I was wondering if the seals from the later...
So my restore is pretty much done, but my water pump pissed itself. Small dribble coming from the bottom of it. So, I start looking for a new one and I can't find a replacement that old. The castings are all different and even the SOR "kit" looks like a newer one with different hoses to adapt...
Oh...and I have to give props to my dad for fishing the wiring harness for the wipers up through the windshield frame. I knew he was the right man for the job and it took him well over an hour. I already had the pull string in place, but he had to use the dental picks to fish the spade...
