Best source fj60 smog pump in July 2018

Cool that folks are finding this thread useful. Here's an update: Since my Cardone airpump install into my 84 fj60 in 2018 December, all is still functioning well through 2023 July. Roughly 5 years and 4,000 miles...not many miles, but they've been good ones!

Nice clean engine compartment! Hard to tell from video, but it does look to vibrate. If with engine off you can wobble the pulley then that’s not good, you are probably correct about bearings. Better inspection would be to pull the belt off, the pulley should not wobble or have any looseness...

Best source fj60 smog pump in July 2018

Thanks guys! I’ve used a few tanks of gas for commuting and Christmas travel, and I have been watching the PS pump after tightening a hose fitting with minor but obvious fluid leak. The pics told a good story, that long term that little leak created quite a mess on the old air pump. It’ll be...

Best source fj60 smog pump in July 2018

Resurrecting this thread to followup and say that the brown bear is running again this weekend. The Cardone pump appears to be holding up. No crazy noises after an hour run time, 5 road miles. Ha! Off to a good start.

Best source fj60 smog pump in July 2018

Did the swap today. On this Cardone I had same issue as DXFR and needed to file about 1/16" off and round some edges of the sleeve so it would fit in the bracket for the long pivot bolt. I also needed to tap the top hole, it was jacked and I couldn't get a bolt to thread in. Other stuff seemed...

I got antsy so I went with the Cardone. It spins and pushes air. Looks interesting, I hope it fits and lasts a while! I haven't pulled the stock one from my truck yet, if i remember later during the swap I'll take a side by side photo.

Hey folks, I have a click click clicking from the air pump on my 1984 FJ60. By hand with the belt off smog pump spins freely, but clicks a couple times each revolution, both clockwise and counterclockwise. WIth engine on there has also been a clicking noise at idle, and on occasion worse noises...

Build month not on VIN plate 84 FJ60

I found this handy website that thinks I have a 10/84 based on my VIN. http://www.toyodiy.com

Build month not on VIN plate 84 FJ60

I usually see month on the driver door plate, the one in my photo above. There is no month on the plate under the hood either. Anyone else have a missing month on their driver door vin plate? Thanks!

Build month not on VIN plate 84 FJ60

Hey! I just picked up an FJ60, all the numbers match all the vin plates and the frame rail. I'm pretty sure the build month has been on all my previous 40s and 60s I've owned. But the build month is not shown in the plate in the driver door jam on this one? See pic. Is a missing month common...

    Vacuum Gauge as Diagnostic tool

Below is a pic with measuring tape. Sunpro gauge, 2"? This gauge location is not too hard to see, but yes you do need to take eyes off road to watch the needle movements with throttle changes. A safer place would be on the a-pillar, or on top of dash. Ps--I totally dig that diagnostic chart...

    Vacuum Gauge as Diagnostic tool

The PO gets credit for this one, i like the good fit of the gauge since its not obstructing under dash space. It is measuring vacuum off the intake manifold, from a fitting back near cylinder 5.

379k miles on my 1983 fj60. After cleaning it works fine. I posted some photos in mot's thread called 'HELP! Disassembling the headlight switch mechanism... Too Far!!' Sorry cant figure out how to post a cross link from my phone. Tim

HELP! Disassembling the headlight switch mechanism... Too Far!!

Here's one more photo showing the plunger switch under the silver 2screw keeper. Edit: you can only see top of plunger switch in photo--looks like small gold disk about same diameter as bb. Also, the 2screw keeper thing is laying sideways above the stalk so you can see the cross section...

HELP! Disassembling the headlight switch mechanism... Too Far!!

Inside stalk is a spring pushing the bb on end. To reinsert the vertical pivot bolt I popped out the bb. Then I needed to poke the bb back in the end and hold it in using the silver 2screw keeper. Edit: the bb and spring are what makes the stalk stay in position. Mot, maybe your bb/spring came...

HELP! Disassembling the headlight switch mechanism... Too Far!!

I had same problem with high beams: they will flash when pulled but not stay on when pushed. I cleaned the switch and problem solved. US Fj60 1983 with 379000 miles Like you, i removed steering wheel and disassembled switch. Took out 2 screws plus the vertical pivot screw to remove stalk.

    Which TLC to buy?

Practical info to match a Cruiser series to everyone's comments... 80 -- 1991 to 1997 (auto, EFI, gadgets) 62 -- 1988 to 1990 (qualifies as late-80s/early-90s, has auto tranny and EFI) 60 -- 1981 to 1987 (same body style as 62 but has manual tranny and carb) A good 60 vs 62 discussion is...

    Big request for 60 owners

so this thread rocks, the combination of diagrams helped tremendously. I found some major mis-routings.... I have one thing to add which (to this newbie) was still not clear from the diagrams. The link illustrates the location of the "Air Filter" that connects to the distributor...
