I used a
FKM Oil Shaft Seal 32 X 40 X 7mm dbl lip
seal to replace the teflon/oring setup. It fit perfectly between lower bearing and snap ring. Oringsandmore has 32 x 40 x 5mm seals that can be used for the lower dust seal and probably better quality too.
Conclusion: A Rockauto 8748 kit, add...
Autozone has the correct lower dust seal. If looking it up on their website, it doesn't list it under a vehicle search, bot if you put in the 223210 part number, it shows "lower seal Land Cruiser Steering gear"
The Edelmann kit arrived yesterday. It had the same wrong seals as the FVP kit. I figured it would. The FVP kit included a couple of more teflon seals that I assume go to under the piston somewhere. I didn't want to have the balls all fall out and go through the hassle of getting them put back in.
Further searches revealed that there are 40mm x 32mm seals available in both 5mm and 7mm depths of various qualities. Finding a good seal shouldn't be a problem. The lower dust seal seems to be getting somewhat scarce though.
I checked McMaster Carr for similar teflon seals. None found in metric. It could be possible to use a spring loaded rubber seal to replace the O ring and teflon setup. The closest I found was a 40mm x 30mm. It might be a little to tight on the shaft though. The shaft measured 31.87mm.
The...
I looked at various Toyota dealer sites, and the exploded diagrams only show the lower dust seal.
SOR's diagram does show all the parts, but shows them discontinued. I kinda doubt if I take the SOR diagram to the local dealer that they'll be able to help me
Yep, 44456-020 Discontinued. To get back on the road, I put the generic kit in a spare steering box and doubled up on the lower dust seal, putting one side facing up.
So far no leaks. I still want to do it right though.
I'll attempt to get the all the right parts for the original steering box...
For an early (80 - 84) square pattern steering box, has anyone had luck purchasing an after market reseal or rebuild kit where all the parts fit?
I bought an FVP brand 8748 kit for my 83 60. Most parts fit except at lower end of pitman shaft dust seal, O ring and white (teflon?) seal all were...
I've had SMS Auto Fabric duplicate that same fabric pattern. The quality was bad and customer service worse. Looked very nice initially, but it faded and surface is frayed and fuzzy on drivers seat now. Upholstery is only three years old and my truck sits inside the garage 90% of the time. No...
My memory is coming back to me. Another time I found aftermarket shackles with 3/4" holes. I made bushings just for the bolt holes on the shackle to take up the slop between the 18mm bolt and larger 3/4" shackle hole. Since the bushings only need to be 1/4" wide or whatever the width of your...
Most all the hardware being sold is for 5/8 leaf spring bolts, some 9/16. Land Cruiser bolts are 18mm as are ID's of the bushings. Frame mounts and shackles would need re-drilled to 18mm. Or some steel sleeves would need to be made with 5/8" ID and 18mm OD to take up the slop between the bolts...
My truck originally had the typical 3” SUA Land Cruiser springs. Then i swapped out the rear springs for a brand new set of 63” Chevy 3/4 ton 3 in lift springs (SUA). The main purpose was for more flex rock crawling. In comparison, with the 63’s, the truck sat 1” lower in the back, the ride...
I ordered some fabric from a place in Oregon. Was told it would take three months. Took over three years to get it. The fabric looked perfect and was a perfect match initially. Did my front seats. Three years later my front seats are faded and don't match the OEM back seats. My front seats are...
