Not to hijack, but my h55f has started to become very difficult to shift into first from neutral unless going to second gear and then first gear. Worse when warm. Any idea why? Was following this thread since the OP has a similar issue.
I don't agree and don't think there is a mechanical explanation for that suggested causality. Additionally, this problem existed before I desmogged the engine.
I adjusted the valves. There was a moderate amount of carbon build up in the valve train but about what is normal for a an original 3FE with several prior owners and no service history. I think its gotten cleaner gradually with more frequent oil changes.

As I was resealing my Transfer case, the spacer on the back of the h55f came loose and fell down on the output shaft of the tranny. I ended up with a detent ball on the floor. Also now the black rubber grommet no longer connects to that silver piece. I would try to reconnect them but my silver...
I don't mean to sway you in one direction or the other. You could still check that truck out carefully in person. It might be a decent starting platform. Its hard to know without examining it in person. A lot of factors which haven't been talked about yet also factor into the purchase decision...
The truck looks pretty good in the pictures. However, The rust repair, even if it is localized to only the areas shown, will still be pretty expensive. I guess I worry there would be additional rust. I think a transmission cooler should have already been added, and from the pictures it looks...
