Ehh.... I might not go that far. The size/overhang and IFS disadvantage of the LX470 would hinder it, but the 3" or so lift would help alot. You'd have to lose the low-rider running boards on the LX, or use an 80 with the running boards still on to make it even.
But it could be close.
Going back to the original question for a second:
If your driveway pours directly out onto a trail, or if you spend at least 40% of your seat time on the trail, an 80 is definitely superior.
But if your Cruiser is a DD, or if you're like me and have to drive 8 or 9 hours to get to the...
Gosh. Your best bet would be to just look through all the threads in this secton. Start with the "2001 Landcruiser project" and Bull's buildup thread, and go from there.
Sure they do. But only in low-range when in stock form, unless you are wheeling in a 91 or 92.
Having a stock lift on the LX470 helps quite a bit too, as does a little v8 power.
Well, I think you're always going to get wrong info posted in a internet forum. That's why people can reply or add posts to ammend or correct the information.
Maybe it's just Shotts' delivery that needs some work.
At any rate, he must be a glutton for punishment, otherwise he would have...
If Shotts wants to post his experiences with things he's tried on his vehicle, whether he knows they've been done before or not, I fully support that.
I just don't see how he catches soooo much s*** for it. A little.... well, sure. It is Shotts after all. ;) But if his posts bring...
I'd call Cruiserdan for all the parts. Geniune Toyota is really the only way to go for axle seals, and Dan will know what you need and give you a good price in the process.
If you are just re-packing wheel bearings and maybe changing the rotors, it should take no more than one afternoon...
And just an FYI to make sure you're not confused, the 2003's and newer would be an LX470. The LX450's production ceased with the end of the 80 series cruisers (1997), and the LX470's production began with the 100 series cruiser (1998).
Cooper offers their Discoverer S/T in the 255 size. It's a good all terrain with a good tread pattern.
I know a lot of dudes in Australia swear by that tire.
If it was a violent shaking, that's more indicative of a bad u-joint; angles wouldn't improve that.
If it was more of a vibration humm, a few inches *could* make a difference.
How many miles on your LX?
It's easier for an aftermarket vendor to sell a bolt on vs. a weld on. Bolt ons can be temporarily removed for vehicle work, like the exhaust on an 80 series cruiser. They can also be removed if you sell the vehicle.
Seeing as how they are just as strong as weld ons (or at least strong...
