    Painter needed close to Tahoe/Reno/Sac

I did a 1 stage on my 80 with no prior experience. You'll need a garage, or in my case a tent, and a compressor + plus lots of odds and ends. I saved $ by going LVLP and it went on super smooth no issues. I used "aircraft" paint. A durable finish used on commercial equipment. My thread is called...

New paint job peel at fenders

the paint job was not prepped right so like Splangly mentioned, you will have more issues. Unfortunatley there is not a whole lat you can do save for pressure washing and scrapping all the bad spots off, sanding, priming, and re-finishing completely. The bad spots should be sealed with an...

Why’s the right black for fj40 chassi

I used a single stage satin hot rod black on my grille and bumper looks great on the exterior.it was a 4:1:1 went on really smooth and has held up well so far. I would agree that glossy is not so desirable for chassis but perhaps the strong stuff comes in gloss only cause that’s what Dad used...

    88 FJ62 dents with roof/hood fade - suggestions?

Many factors to consider here, could range widely depending on the conditions of the paint/body. The process is a lot more labor intensive than people think, plus all of the paint/primer/sealer and other supplies. I’d say 4-5k minimum if you want it done right. That’s 30+ hours labor and...

    DIY gasket/weather stripping?

A PO boogered up the gasket on the license plate cover (80 series) and now that I just refinished the paint and putting things back together I’m getting anal about everything. I’m a little stumped if I should do some diy gasket material or fine bead of silicone to keep the water out of the...

looking for advice on beginners spray paint equipment

1 newbie to another...I have no experience with bedliners or the like but for general spraying on the cheap you should look into LVLP guns; low volume low pressure, otherwise you will need to purchase a high volume/pressure compressor ($$$). HVLP will yield more consistent results and is the...

Safe buy with rust on frame?

I am from the west coast so please keep that in mind but here’s my $.02: Hard to say when not in person but that doesn’t look too bad IMO. You could always take a screwdriver and poke at some of it. Nuts and bolts will be seized, hubs, brake rotors, etc.on the underside will make working on it...

    Fine Lines

Victory! not perfect but glad to finally lay down the finish coat. Will need to buff out a few runs, peel spots, and where I bumped it (tight quarters). Hood required much slower strokes and thicker coat to flow.

PPG reccommmends Acetone, works well for parts I can get too but inside the nozzle on gun (plastic gasket and spinning part where paint flows just before exiting the gun) is not reachable so requires a soak or running solution through gun I guess. Got a 65 degree day tomorrow with little to no...

That is what the local body shop recommended. It is a polyurethane paint. Thinner doesn’t touch it. Never heard of gun cleaner, and didn’t know I could use reducer. Please elaborate....

Ya I was pretty bummed, but this has basically happened at every step, at least it is completely fixable. Sorry I didn’t see this sooner—I am using the sprayit package set from Amazon (80$ about)for LVLP, 3300 or 3500 I think. used the 2.0 nozzle for primer and 1.7 for first coats of Delfleet...

Most updates on this paint job are here: Cement gray 80 But here is a rundown of progress for this thread with input/experience from this noob painter. So the door jambs went Just about flawless and I was encouraged. When I went for the roof, tailgate, and hood I got orange peel and bad dust...

    pitting in primer

I agree but the guy convinced me because (he said) the 1000 will cut the glaze down without knocking down the primer, any coarser and you will dig out the glaze

    pitting in primer

I am pretty sure it is the 1.4 tip, the kit came with a 2.0. Ok, just talked to the folks at the local paint shop and I am going to spot putty the really pitted spots and deep sctratches that still show, then go over with 1000 grit.

    pitting in primer

ok, live and learn. I did test it out before hand and it looked great to me, but I didnt know what to look for i guess. I plan on sanding the whole thing with 320, then re-spraying after making sure I can produce a smooth coat. Thanks

    pitting in primer

I am sanding my primer and there is pitting. Even after I get all of the guide coat off there are still some pits. I have sanded down to the old paint in some places and it is frustrating. The picture shows the pitting as darker spots, with more sanding done at bottom. some say it is too dry...

    Repaint question... prep

Ya, it is easy to become super anal and thorough when doing a project like this. My main concern with the jambs is door striker/latch adjustment. I have always had older cars and I hate squeeks, rattles, and doors that do not shut or stay shut properly. And currently all my doors are likely...
