Go with the pioneer avic -n3
You can use the fact that you can connect a rear view camera to it Plus voice for turn by turn with a much larger screen to sell it to the wife.
Of course you can add just about any thing else to it as well.
Check it out
I went dual band years ago and never looked back.
We have an extensive network of repeaters here 2m and 70cm so the dual band is sure nice.
Have one in the truck along with a twin set up at home along with two HF rigs.
Was planning on putting one HF rig in the truck but I have put that on a...
Well as a Ham I have to tell you my dual band radio works just fine plugging it into the old cigarette lighter socket. It has been there since I purchased the truck.
So not all that work is always required to get the radio up and running..

Like Jim L6KML has said..
Get your ham licence...
LoveTractor you know you will need one antenna that covers all the bands that the radio can transmit on or one for each don't you?
The radio is a good preformer for a hand held with little power. But to truely reap the rewards a ham radio...
I agree with FJ40_owner --- Get your ham licence first. the temptation is very great to transmit..:D
I also agree that a hand held radio is very limited for some of the places you may tend to roam.:frown:
Not enough wattage (output)..
Nice features but believe me when you are in a position...
CDN_Cruiser---I've used those up till I got the Cruiser..

If I decide to install HF in the Cruiser, Then I may drill the hole, but not necessarily in the roof. I'm thinking the Icom AH series of...
There are a number of ways similar to dfmorse's installation.
They all require that you drill a hole some where.
Mount your antenna on the roof rack then drill a hole through you roof, bolt in a coax splice (this also becomes a ground) seal it. Connect antenna with short lead and connector out...

Hi I'm VE3UOD..
I use a Kenwood TS-731 VHF / UHF rig in my Cruiser coupled to a glass mounted antenna (so I had no holes to drill into the Cruiser or coaxial cables to run through the door jams etc).
I've been a Ham Radio operator since the early 1990's..working all...
Thanks for the welcome here Ron.
I was not tring to say the glass mount was a better antenna than any other..
Over the last 20 years the glass mount has saved me drilling many holes for mounting antennas. (i have also drilled many of those in my day) I only offer it up as another option for...
Try a GLASS MOUNTED ham anntenna.. no holes no clamps..
You can get them at your local ham radio stores..Single or dual band..That's 2 meters and 70 centimeters..
I run a dual band radio in my cruiser with a Glass Mount antenna and I use it everyday on and off repeaters...
