I like the State Park better for just chilling. Spectacular scenery, and quite remote. Any of the roads that are not the main park roads (which are all gravel) will be challenging, and will scratch up your rig for sure.
All main roads in the National Park are paved, it is far more crowded...
@PearlLX470 - no worries!
@The Phoenician - gulp. Glad you made it back OK.
Standing offer for anyone who heads this way- I have plenty of room for folks to leave a trailer if weather turns s***ty. Just come grab later.
@meatloaf that is awful news- so sorry to hear. Good news is there is plenty of good weather left to come on out before it gets blazing hot.
@bobcatag2006 - it's probably 9 hours to the State Park Ranger Station, and then another hour plus to the camp site. You planning on coming tru Marfa...
DIff won't be done until tomorrow, I'll pick up in ATX and head back to Marfa Friday. Probably will not get it done over weekend, so I am out for camping.
Am happy to lead crew down Pinto Canyon; I'll probably be on a motorcycle. Did that ride about 6 weeks ago, and roads were good. May see...
@meatloaf - my friends are booked unfortunately. LMK if I can help scout other locations.
I'll meet you at Tres Papalotes. I'm now tentative on attending due to USPS. Have to get rear 3rd member rebuilt- I bought a used one from a guy in Arkansas and a rebuild kit from Valley Hybrids to go...
Everyone using GMRS/FRS for trail comms? Lots of places out here with zero cell coverage. Coverage is bad enough that I carry a PLB in the vehicles at all times...
Sauceda is the middle of BBRSP. Ranger HQ, store, etc. West of the Solitario. Terlingua is east of the Solitario. If we do Terlingua Ranch, we can also do some driving in BBNP is my thought. I have friends who have a couple places in Terlingua Ranch we could camp and have toilet/shower.
Really depends on what everyone wants to do. We could base out of the Sauceda area (SP HQ) 10-12th, or be based in Terlingua Ranch. Lots to drive in TR, and it's a good deal closer to BBNP.
I would agree we should move around- the State Park is really big. Bigger than the NP, with far fewer visitors. Start in the Solitario, and then head west across the park.

I would 100% agree we should make reservations. Lots to do in State Park- if the Solitario area is open (was not in Oct when I tried to go), there are more than a few trails and an honor bar in one of the out holdings. State Park is also far less traveled (and patrolled) than National Park...
I also ride ADV bikes, and got this guide a year or so ago for Big Bend. While it is motorcycle specific, it has a ton of great info on trails in both the national and state parks, as well as Terlingua Ranch. Comes with maps of each. It's a good guide for planning and execution of a trip to...
