    House painting

You still need to back brush when you spray. Spraying is nice with two people, one to spray and one to move ladders, keep the bucket full and back brush. I would just paint it with a brush. I have seen over spray become are real problem with houses and cars. Slap and Smeer I do one...

Anyone build with SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels)

I have used them when building a timber frame houses. It was great to work with, and the R-values are out of this world. I used attic trusses for storage space, and eliminated the need a for air exchange system. With the timber frame you can put all of the sheetrock on the outside of the...

Maple Veneer cabinet front repair advice?

The edges are an easy fix. The fronts are not worth fixing. Replacing just the ones that are bad is guetto, they will never match the existing ones. Mostly because of fading caused by uv degradation. I would buy cabinet grade plywood and do it myself, of hire someone to do it. Good luck

    DIY Tiling: Opinions Please

As a contractor I too would vote no on the tile stairs. You can however tile the toe board (vertical surface), then buy prefinished wood stair treads. I did this in the house I built for myself, and I think it looks good. Install all of the whole tiles that you can, then rent a good wet tile...

    Any boiler techs here?

I had a bad connection to one zone. The hot water that was heated for that zone just went thru the primary loop and back into the boiler. Since the water was still hot the boiler short cycled untill it cooled enough to restart the boiler. Call tech support at the place that makes the...

PEX pipe potential problems, please pontify

Just because you can buy it does not mean it is legal. In MA. it is not. Neither is doing your own plumbing. On the positive side I think it is a great product, and I have about 5000' of in my house for radiant heat. Here you can do your own heating , but not plumbing.

How do I pass my insulation inspection?

You can stack insulation to get a higher R-value ie. R30 + R15 = R45. If you want to save a few bucks the buy unfaced and staple 6 mil poly inside the bathroom before the sheetrock. I only use unfaced insulation to save money. BTW the vaper barrier always goes on the warm side of the wall, so...

    Deck protection ideas needed

Wood perservation is a slippery slope. The only rule is the more pigment that is added, the longer it will last. Oil based products will penatrate deeper and last longer. Just wash with a H2O/bleach/soap mixture. This will kill mold and mildew that prevent it from bonding to the wood. Sanding...

    Home heating question (bleed valve?)

I would use a sprial (sp) vent. It is a air elimanator. The one I used was about $70 it was not the cheapest, but it might be the best. If you can sweat copper pipe then you can put it in. You do not need to drain your system. Just close the feed and return lines from all of the zones, then...

    Houseplan 1.0

Radiant is not that expensive if you run the hose yourself. I put it in my shop and love it. It cost me about the same as an oil burner and baseboards. Open floor plan is the best. In the house that I am just finishing for my family I insulated all interior wall for sound reduction. On the other...
