Problems initially were related to a poor install, and some problems were due to fuel problems (also install related). But some recent things I think are just because of the engine. Reading forums abroad I am seeing that a lot of people are having issues with it.
The 2.8 is great! I think...
a 1HD-FTE will get the job done, especially with custom tune and G-Turbo. Not sure if the 5.0 will be the next available engine from Cummins, but I'm excited about it. I've been driving my R2.8 powered FJ62 for a while now and still really like it.
The twin turbo won't fit, but the single turbo will. To be perfectly honest, unless you live in AUS, I wouldn't put one into anything in the US. It's not happy on our fuel, and turbo's go out, etc. We have a customer with a Tundra converted to that engine, and they're not happy. It was done...
I agree with Beno, Tugarin - your work may look fantastic but with any conversion you should double your budget.
I prefer the Toyota diesels over anything else, but I prefer to keep with newer ones. For the most part our days are spend installing the 1HZ, 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, and 1HD-FTE. They are...
I don't have any personal experience with that engine, but since it's ISB it should be a pretty nice cummins for a cruiser. The new QSB cummins is a better choice IMO, but they're $$$
Absolutely, but why??? I would rather find a 700r4 or 4l60/80e then adapt it to the stock TC. The TC mounts in the factory location so there's no driveline mods, and the engine fits nicely in the engine bay that way.
www.marks4wd.com has the adapters.
The Duramax isn't impossible into an 80 series, just not plausible. Bottom line... Too much engine for a Land Cruiser.
This 5.0 seems like the right size beast, I'll be checking my calendar in 10 years when those Nissan trucks fall apart around that engine so we could start doing viable...
We always make out own mounts, don't trust the AA mounts with this torque. Not that the mounts have a problem, just the rubbers. Our mounts utilize the factory 6.2/6.5 engine mount units
I've never personally done that conversion, but you can adapt the two assuming you have a GM plate on the 4bt. You can adapt to the Toyota 4-speed using the marks adapter, at least to the bellhousing. I'm not sure if the crank adapter will be the same as the v8 kit.

I have purchased engines from Sheldon before, and my advice is to use someone who knows their sh!#. With the miles on these engines, there's a solid chance you might be buying something with a rod knock or bad bearings. I would only trust a specialist on this one, otherwise you're just gambling
Capt Bligh - What half cut version are you looking at? If it's been sitting for 5 years, I can understand why he's hesitant. It may need new fuel, change oil, maybe a slow turn to clear cylinders, maybe some atf in the cylinders.
Just to be cautious
Or, you can just fire it up and see what...
Check with a JDM engine importer. You can find the 1hd-t easier than the 1hdt-fe though. The only problem you'll run into with the FE is getting the computer, wiring harness, etc. Sometimes they will include it, but expect there to be something missing.
