Found and ordered a very nice set of 74 FJ55 wiring diagrams on Ebay. Price was right. Ordered them.
1974 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ-55 FJ 55 FJ55 74 CHASSIS WIRING DIAGRAM CHART | eBay
Wired up the plug for the trailer lights. I couldn't find the proper wires or connectors, so I finally went to my Haynes manual. It actually had the wiring diagram for a 74 pig. Found out there was supposed to be a switch, which changed the color scheme on the wires to the turn signals. I...
Yeah, 6 & 12, none at 3 & 9, which says trunnion bearing and not wheel bearings.
Don't have specs in front of me, but on the knuckles, I believe the primary spec is the pull weight, and once the bearings settled in, they needed to be torqued down a little.
On the wheel bearings, snug up and...
I first did the wheel bearings, hoping for an easy fix. It didn't fix it. When jacked up, I still had vertical play in the wheels, so then I decided to do the dirty job (and it is dirty).
I used the same shims, preloaded with the fish scale, and put it back together. After a couple weeks of...
took it off road for the first time today. Played in the sand. climbed a few steep grades. checking it out for hunting season which is coming up quickly.
redid the knuckles 3 weeks ago. New trunnion bearings, set to spec. repacked and adjusted wheel bearings. Drove it, it still had a slight wobble.
Today, pulled the wheels, re-adjusted the trunnion bearings a little tighter, snugged the wheel bearings a little tighter. Fixed the problem...
hooked up the tach, threw the GPS up on the windshield and did a 60 mile freeway trip. I wanted to see, 1) how it handled at freeway speeds after rebuilding the trunnion bearings, 2) how accurate the speedo was with 33X9.50 tires, and 3) what rpms I was pulling at what speeds.
What I found...
Had the factory AC serviced and charged on Friday.
Did the passenger side trunnion bearings on Saturday. Did the drivers side trunnion bearings today.
I thought today would be quicker, as I knew what I was doing today, but it was only 2 hours less.
Had a bad death wobble with the 33X9.50 and chrome toyota wheels I picked up on CL. People said the passenger side front wheel was wobbling so bad it looked like it was going to fall off.
I repacked and adjusted the wheel bearings yesterday and it didn't fix the problem. I figured it meant...
Took the piggy on her maiden voyage. Soon realized I/it had a problem. Popped the hood, and discovered the U-joints on the steering column were shot. In fact, the one closest to the firewall was totally wiped out.
Even though Toyota used that same part on the 55, 60, & 62 from 1968-1990...
No, just the door jamb stuff. I got it at SOR. It went on pretty easily (with a few taps on a rounded screwdriver handle with the hammer), and looks good.
All the rubber on the windows is in pretty good shape, but the stuff on the tailgate is not. That is my next project.
