The potential issue with spacing out the clutch from the water pump is you loose the centering interface of the dowel on the water pump and the hole on the clutch.
The one where you space the clutch off the water pump which is what I think you are doing. I think other people are spacing the fan off the clutch.
In any event you need about 8mm, 5/16” of spacing.

Anyway, from my experience, the amount you need to space out the fan to clear the tensioner is enough that the clutch will no longer interface with the dowel on the water pump. It’s that interface that guarantees centric alignment of the assembly. Not sure if it will be...
