    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

IMO they used plastic for us because it’s cheap and would work, being protected by splash shields and tucked up between two crossmembers.. but metal on the venza because it hangs lower and is more exposed to potential damage from road debris. If there were a risk of cross threading, it would be...

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

Since you asked for an opinion… I think he’s wrong. I cannot see how the stock filter and spring stack acts as a bypass element. The bottom of the tube is blank, no special valve or anything, so it seems to me that the spring merely pushes the filter up against the top of the housing to...

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

Yep, normal for the tube to be recessed somewhat. As long as it's not 2" too short it'll still do its job of preventing the filter collapsing.. which is even less likely with the TRD filters and their existing internal support tube. The factory filter doesn't have this part though. MotivX...

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

16 oil changes so far on my $25 (at the time) venza housing with zero problems, using a tool meant for the stock housing giving the ability to torque to factory spec. Also using the provided drain tool for clean changes, then toss that tool in the trash with the filter. The perfect solution IMO.

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

If fear of damage to the female portion of the filter stand were an issue they wouldn’t have used aluminum on the Venza. My gut is Toyota figured between the splash shields and the recessed position they didn’t think physical damage was much of a concern so went with the plastic since it’s...

I think he's assuming many people watching his videos can't be trusted to bend the tabs correctly.. and he may be right.

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

I can't wrap my head around how the bypass function works when the force exerted by incoming oil against a clogged filter is inwards (this is why they collapse, and why there is a support tube), not downwards (which is what is needed to compress the spring, moving the filter downwards and...

    Cracked plastic oil filter housing

I don’t have a filter cap here to inspect but was pretty sure all the spring does is hold the filter snug against the intended spot so it actually filters, and if there is a bypass it was further up inside the housing.

I always interpreted it as the plastic works fine as long as it isn't over tightened. But if it is, the aluminum gives more strength and resiliancy to get things loose. Personally I also dislike the idea of the integrity of my oiling system depend on plastic parts for a few hundred thousand miles.

Was the filter support tube the same length as your stock one? The OE metal part isn’t very expensive if you’d like to upgrade to something a little more reliable. As I remember it the drain valve on the above linked one was leaky… though that doesn’t matter when everything is buttoned up.
