    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

If the shaft binds then the bearings went in wrong. I can’t tell you exactly how they went in wrong but I had to do it over and over again until it wouldn’t bind. You can watch a few videos online of people doing it although I didn’t find a single one that was well explained when it came to...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Yep, I 100% didn’t touch any of the Teflon rings on the outside of that big piston (can’t remember what it’s called). There was a teflon ring or two on the inside of the box where the sector shaft goes that I did replace. If you’ve looked up any how-to’s on here It’s the one where people mention...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Yep for the return lines you can just use 3/8” TOC (transmission oil cooler) hose from the parts store, I think I got 4 feet of it to replace both lines. This is all for an fj60, I don’t know anything about what fj80’s run FYI. And I didn’t replace any Teflon rings when rebuilding the gear box...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Great, gear box is leak free but the pump still leaks. The seal kit for the gear box was less than $20 when I bought it. I picked up a seal kit for the pump at the same time for closer to $10 if i remember correctly but didn’t never start that job since I couldn’t find any success stories online...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Rockauto has remanufactured 80 series boxes and they're actually closer to $300 if you return your core. I'm assuming a reman box means its a genuine toyota box thats been rebuilt but thats just a guess. Is it possible they're remanufacturing off-brand boxes? Double woof if thats the case.

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Oh yeah, I forgot to update this thread. I got the $17 Edelmann 8770 kit and replaced everything in my gearbox with all the kit pieces with the exception of the two teflon rings that people have a hell of a time getting back in without ripping. Apparently the rings in this cheapo kit are...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Yeah I’ll be replacing the soft return lines for sure and taking out the hard lines to inspect them. Currently considering just going the cheapo route and opening the box up and replacing all the seals rather than doing a full rebuild kit. It’s hard to argue with the $17 price tag of a seal kit...

    Power Steering Gear Box Replacement

Finally decided to address my badly leaking power steering system today by first tightening the clamps on the return lines, making a new gasket for the reservoir cap (whenever I run the truck frothy ATF spews from the cap) and finally flushing the system and replenishing it with new ATF. I took...
