Curious was the aluminum thread stripped or the steel bolt? Bolt is easy fix. Not sure if Fairey used a softer steel? Certainly would be upgrading to case harden bolts.

Personally if your sure the shaft will clear the torque I would remove the transmission hump. I almost sold my 73 FST around 2007? Came with a hard top installed which probably saved the floor. I do not even remember the carpeting it had. I removed it immediately in 1994. Prior to putting it up...

I picked up one of my ODs today. Not a complete one with the output gear and spacer. But enough to get a better idea of how it is put together. Maybe Friday until I get a chance to look at it. But I will have one available to check out.

I do not have any spare gaskets. May have one for the two halves. As I remember the back cover of the OD is a thin paper gasket and also has an O ring. Not sure if the regular back cover transmission output shaft on the transfer case is the same as when the OD is installed? The gaskets used on...

The end of that roll pin is behind the the shift fork. Not sure how you could get a punch on it to drive in much less flare the end. It's really the end you can't see that needs the end flared. I'm not ever sure the pin is still in the shaft. Later this we be around mine and see if I can see...

Not sure if this will help but this is what the slot on the other side of the shift fork looks like.

Removing the lower half it will look like the. Bottom is on the left. Nothing should fall out. Just a idler gear in the bottom. It's the top that is trickier to get together and apart.

In the the US all 73 FJ40s had a three speed. Early 74s also had a three speed. I need to measure my early 76 FJ40 and 73 to see the if the location of the torque is the same. If there are a Fairey OD should fit with a four speed. I've had my 73 for twenty eight years and have never even started...

Interesting about your torque tube/crossmember. Since the 73 was made for a four speed which is three and a half inches longer than the three speed the OD should fit with a three speed. It wasn't until the 79 model that Fairey literature said the OD would not fit in a FJ40. Fuel tank moved...

Now I'm really curious to look at mine. Obvious that is your oil fill. Think I still four of these housings stored away. Did noticed that the manual linked for four speed. How the opening for the lever used screws on the transmission and transfer case boots for reference are for the four...

Did you ever get a pictures. All my Fairey Overdrives are boxed up at another location. I was hoping to be at that location today. Not going to happen this week. I can't remember a fill plug in the cover. Remember the screw that holds the spring loaded ball that keeps the shaft with the shift...

I would lift the right side of the cruiser to be sure oil.is spilling over into the OD. Would not hurry filling it either. Once your done filling the fill plug on the transfer will spill out any over fill. You want.to be 100% sure you have a full. Years ago sold a couple of these. One person...

Transfer case shares to same oil so not sure I wouldn't be going that heavy of that weight especially going into winter. Remember a elk hunt back in the early eighties where we camped at 8,000' and temperatures were sub zero at night. Would start my FJ40 and once I got it so it would stay idling...

My guess it could be the synchro for OD. Half on the right shows the collar that slides either way. You can see the brass synchro with teeth on it.
