Changing over to a part time 4WD and fuel economy.

I did 'Unwatch' but it not seem to happen, so I will try again after answering this post. I am guessing that most if not all on this area of the forum do not full time off road, I include myself in this sentence. I am also unsure of how many actually enter into competitions to really prove...

Again you are not comparing eggs with eggs, why not make the entire front end from something like a Titanium kind of metal (no metal skills here), but you still won't get any improvement in fuel consumption...........well you might, your wallet would be a lot lighter. It could also be argued...

Agreed, they were thinner than the later versions, but the wear probably accelerated when off roading, given the effort applied to them on tarmac being shared via the rear wheels. Dave

As usual there is always debate and so what is better and what is not just with regards to subject matter in this thread. Often people throw in stuff to bolster their opinion, and one thing I have seen on this thread is about additional wear on the mechanical side of the 4WD. When I bought...

Mainly because they were cheaper and more accessible to those who might not be able to afford them? Re 'My rig was up for serious crawling' Perhaps because Toyota they did not sell them like that? As I said it is pointless unless for serious off roading, and not even related to on highway...

You need weight on the steering for 'feel', my version has variable rate steering, super light when parking and getting heavier as speed increases, either way the point has been proven that conversions to PT are pointless. Regards Dave

Well it is good to see that something I and many others pointed out over the years (me being a time served mechanic to boot) has been vindicated by someone who has been a 'professional' off tarmac user, now all I need to do is prove that having an electric cooling fan something that makes your...

Agreed, the later models have a 'Viscous coupler' to avoid some of the drive train backlash and was fitted in the later than around 93, and of course works well with the ABS. Regards Dave

I agree with the comment about drive train vibes but rarely an issue unless you are going over 2", most lifts over that are for the 'look at me' point of view, damn I can barely reach over my engine (5'10") right now and my 80 presently has a loaded roof rack on it! 3" and higher for bigger...

Changing over to a part time 4WD and fuel economy.

IIRC I was answering this question 8 years back or so, and there was all sorts of arguments about the various advantages/disadvantages, one argued about do tail outs around bends now the front was not being driven, I told him to go and sell his 80 and buy something more appropriate, the 80 was...

You are not going to gain a lot I am afraid, and you will find the road manners are different as well, I say that but it depends on your typical driving style. Concentrate on keeping your 80 well serviced, tyres correct pressure.....blah blah...you will fair better in the long run. Regards Dave
