   Cracks in my timing chain cover-why?

   Normal. I had two new ones in my possession and noticed the same. I’d personally replace with new regardless since it comes with the oil pump screw looking thing and cover as one unit iirc. If for any reason you need to get this cover off again it’s another head off job. No thanks.
