Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

OK, so the moment that I've been waiting for finally arrived last night! After a week's worth of late night wrenching, removing the wiring harness, cooler lines, shifters, linkages, starter motor, bell housing bolts etc. the transmission has finally been removed! Pulling out of the truck...

Is this the good kinda rust or the bad kind?

I don't know about price, but if that was in Michigan, it would be considered "rust free". looks great to these rust-belt eyes! for reference: this... this is the bad rust

    Extending breathers

Good point. it's definitely a trade off. but I make it assuming that I won't drown myself so I won't drown the axles! I've personally not had a smell issue with the rear one. The front though, 100% agree. you could occasionally smell it and it smells kind of like bad popcorn and stinky...

    Extending breathers

I don't recall. I did it on one of my old trucks years ago... it may have been a hole that nature provided. haha

    Extending breathers

you can also hide the rear axle breather in the rear quarter on the tool kit side. I don't have pics but I did the simple version of rubber hose and a lawnmower fuel filter as the air filter

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

Last night I was able to get the interior back together! It went together without any real issues aside from the occasional order mis-step. The sunroof was honestly the hardest part. It didn't seem like it was quite wide enough to meet the bolt holes on each side, but I was able to get...

In addition the the paint, I was able to make some progress on the underside of the roof. I was planning on putting some sound deadner on the ceiling since the headliner was off but I found something else. Apparently the factory mastic that bonds the roof skin to the roof bows was likely...

And here is the final result! I think that it turned out great! the sheet metal underneath isn't perfect but this hides most of the blemishes. We'll see how long it holds up. It's supposed to be UV resistant and not need top-coats or re-seals.

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

I finally got to do the fun part this weekend and paint the roof! I used Monstaliner roll-on mix with a very light grey color called "man on the moon". It all went pretty seamlessly! First was taping off, covering, and deep clean. The wax remover that I used messed with the primer...

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

I was able to make some more progress on the roof and sunroof glass last night. The roof patches are all in and the holes welded up! I cleaned the roof thoroughly and it's ready for final prep before paint. I was able to make a surprising amount of progress on the sunroof glass! With a...

Cont. On a more positive note, my new tires arrived today! 33" Falken Wildpeak A/T4W's! I'll let you guys know how they are but I've read good things! I still have a lot on my plate if I want to take this truck on a trip through Michigan's UP at the end of May. but there's a chance that I...

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

Ok, after a long hiatus and a trip to Japan, I was able to restart work on the truck. I've been plugging along at getting the roof rust removed. I've cut out two panels and welded in those plus all the rivnut holes that remained. I'm almost done so it should just be one more evening of that...

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

Mild update on the roof project. I've begun to take the roof apart and strip it down to repair the rust and paint. I knew that the roof rack feet were rusted underneath but I didn't expect that it was this bad... woof so... as opposed to simply filling in the rivnut holes and smoothing, I...

New 80 series owner - Did I make a Mistake?

it wouldn't be a bad plan to bring a clean one back. I haven't driven my latest one yet in the winter (bad trans), but I plan on oiling the undercarriage every season to preserve it. that should go a long way. Ultimately, the rust thing is your call. could maybe sell the truck to someone...

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

thanks for the words of encouragement! I'll get it eventually but I feel that much better having the part in the garage. luckily our little one is now consistently falling asleep at 7pm so that gives me a bit of time in the evening to work (bathroom for now, truck later).

New 80 series owner - Did I make a Mistake?

If you can get OE coils, that will help tremendously. You're on the bump stops so that's got to be one harsh ride. A friend and I down here in the Ann Arbor / Detroit area have 80's. He just did his lift a couple months ago. he may still have his springs. I'm planning on lifting mine later...

Project Bluey - the dad wagon!

Long time no update so here we go: After performing the fluid flush on the transmission, I took the truck for a test drive and it didn't change the behavior of the transmission at all. I drove it for a half hour with no improvements noted. Therefore, unfortunately, my fluid flush didn't fix...

    A343F(?) Shifting trouble shooting help

Thanks Malleus for all of the info! I'll have to save those links for later. I may get a junkyard trans as a temporary / permanent fix. I'm still exploring all possibilities. Kernal, thanks for all of the input. the current fluid is Napa Dex III with a splash of Lubegard ShudderFix. I...
