Tried and failed to purchase a 2-Ton engine hoist, so since I need to return my Father-in-law's trailer, I engineered this 3FE ike an ancient Egyptian, got it upright and stable, off the trailer and onto a dolly without hurting myself.
True statement, though I call it a highly educational failure.
Short version - After a weird lurch and terrible burning smell, truck wouldn't go in 1st or reverse. Pulled the trans, did the full rebuild, confirmed the fried 1st/Reverse clutch, did a bunch of stuff under the truck "while I was...
100%! Plus, it'll be a thrill to put the money I save refreshing this one instead of buying a reman into a rear bumper if I pull it off!
As an aside, you're talking to a guy who tried to rebuild his A440F in his garage, so I'm very much a faith-based wrench, lol.
Excited to have this donor. Planning to evaluate and hoping to swap this in for my knocking original with almost 250k. This one was supposedly running good and with under 100k miles when it was pulled, so fingers crossed!
Jon, looking at these now for Vera, looks simple enough, but are you saying you pick up new Toyota gaskets and skip the ones that ship with the cats?
Did you get the O2 sensors from this same company? Thanks!
All makes sense, appreciate the input! I was already going to pick up a 2-ton stand for the check & refresh process. And a 2t crane.
I was just confused about mounting the starter from watching a Youtube. This guy had to kluge up the mount because the starter on his Honda bolted from behind...
Nice!
So evaluate with...
Compression test
Leakdown test
Check valve train for sludge
Pull oil pan
Inspect
Measure main & rod bearing clearance
Then clean/spruce & reseal all the stuff that's going to be way easier on the stand.
So, am I thinking about this starter thing backwards...
Hey all, hopefully an easy pair of questions...
Background (this is not the question - just info): My 1991 FJ80 has an undiagnosed knock and power loss I want to sort out. Could be bad, but with close to 250k the engine, was planning a possible rebuild anyway.
Today: I was gifted a 3FE. The...
Went and picked up a gifted donor 3FE. What a great gift! Couple hours drive and an hour or two pulling off parts that he's planning to use in his 40 build. Not 100% certain about history, but he said the previous guy told him it was running when pulled and had less than 100K on it, which would...
You removing the smog pump, too? The other thing I'm working on is the plugs, I think for the air injection. Seems a lot of people go with brass 1/4" NPT, but that seems a bit sketchy to me. Certainly it's not a 1/4" NPT thread on the manifold? I've heard people talk about M14 plugs, which...
Old thread, I know, but if anyone's still watching it...
This seems like a cheap and simple way to go, why do so many get the block-off plates? Do the plates just provide easy reversibility for places with actual regulations?
Thanks for the feedback, all! Fast shipping, 10 minutes slipping old and new belts around the fan, new belt on, sitting nice and high like it should, and back in action. I have plenty of room to re-tighten in a few dozen miles as it breaks in.
And I think know what happened. Way too long of...
I do think you're on to something. I give it 50/50 that I didn't tighten that belt properly. I'll get the new one in a couple of days and see. Be good to be back to merely-leaky rather than hard-to-steer with just one 30-minute belt change.
Hmm - This is reasonable. I haven't rechecked the FSM, but it's entirely possible that I loosened this belt for some reason and didn't re-tension properly. I can't think why other than it possibly being in the way of something else I was trying to get to, but I did quite a few side projects in...
Hey fellas - I've got a significantly loose PS belt (at least for starters) causing hard and notchy steering especially at lower RPMs.
1991, FJ80, 3FE
I replaced the belt (along with the other two and the water pump and that pulley that rattles) probably 10K miles ago with new OEM. Steering...
I'm still alive. My tranny shop thanked me for my patience, lol. The update was that they went through my transmission, couldn't find a problem, put it back together, and it still didn't shift. So they're still exploring one or two options, but thinking it's the valve body and that seems like...
