It will go down as one of the best (reliable) cars i have owned yep we own a couple of more modern cars which drive nicer around town but that is not the point with a 60 its for the love for sure. It has rust in the roof which they are going to take care of glad its going to a good home.
i bid a sad farewell to my HJ61 12ht today it was actually sold to G TURBO who have some pretty awesome plans for the old girl and has been made an addition to there already impressive fleet of Toyota's. This forum has been so helpful over the years and hope it continues to be so.

generally if its forcing coolant out under pressure its a head gasket that does not look good. Oily residue in the coolant is not a good sign you need a good cruiser mechanic to diagnose maybe what is going on including a TK test or some the other reasons you listed it could be.
agreed they will always blow some black smoke when working hard and always do on start up just the way they are. i was actually very surprised with my valve clearances i had not done mine to close to 80,000 kms and when checked they were all within spec but normally i would do every 40~50...
try cruiser world in the netherlands they have a very good range of hard to get parts and will ship to anywhere, i have the cable lockers on mine and they are not that common in australia they would be the first ones i would try.
if its a hj61 12ht 24 volt (i agree with roscoe its easier to take the radiator out for access) but its a not hard but a fairly long job as to take the rad out both batteries and trays have to come out, front grill undo the centre bonnet support undo the air con condenser to gain access to 2...
Yeh generally when the fuel gauge goes wacky the temp gauge will go into the red when its not actually overheating the tacho has its pick up from a sensor on the bell housing i don't think that seems to be your problem. How are all your fuses none were affected?
yep i had one from brand new and it was quite bad along with surging went back to the dealer quite a few times in the day they finally fixed it but never said how it was a very common problem i was very disappointed after my 12 ht which i went back to....
mmm interesting on my jap import hj61 12ht my fuel gauge from full to empty takes 70 but its a a 90 litre tank, there is nothing wrong with gauge they put in a 20 safety margin so you were (in there eyes) less likely to run out of diesel
just a side note make sure the breather on top of the transfer case is not blocked after years of crud its a bastard to get at but well worth checking out as it can cause leaks if blocked...
yes taking a radiator out on a 24 volt 12ht hj61 is not the most enjoyable thing to do in saying that it would take a nuclear explosion for a radiator to fall out......
yes but if the transfer is over full and if the gearbox is low (if manual) the bypass does not really work it is more than likely unless its just a bad general gasket leak that the little hard to get at Breather cap on top of the transfer is gummed up with crap and creating pressure....
