Knuckle Rebuild - Did I get ripped off?

The grinding noise on lift is likely your driveshaft. It's either out of phase, has a worn U-joint, or perhaps just needs the slip yolk greased. Is the truck lifted? The lift could also be the reason as the pinion angle on the driveshaft increases with lift. Some trucks are more sensitive to...

    Spontaneous high mpg?

My rig gets 12-13mpg on the freeway, and that's as reliable as the sunrise. That said, I drive from LA to Mammoth Lakes not infrequently, which is a tick over 7500ft of elevation change. When making the return trip, I normally hit 15-16mpg. Why? It's 150 miles of straight downhill slope along...

    Best gullwing window replacements

Wagongear is definitely the best out there (IMHO), but I believe the gent who makes them has focused on other pursuits for a while. Permanently or temporarily, I don't know. Emu Wing out of Australia is another "high end" option. You can order their wings as either solid panels or glass. Beyond...

80 owner needs some drive shaft help to save vacation.

My DC shaft grenaded in the middle of Utah, on the freeway, doing about 80mph. I consider myself extremely lucky that all I got was a dented trans pan. Could have been so, so much worse. Pulled the mangles mess of a shaft, locked the center diff and motored on my way to Phoenix where I found a...

    Ineos Grenadier

Honestly don't see a lot of downside on this. Proven BMW engine mated to the legendary 8HP transmissions, built by Magna, an absolute beastly war-tested 4x4 manufacturer. It may be a new brand, but all the players behind the scenes are best-of-the-best.

    Head units that aren't hideous

Pretty happy with my set-up. One of these days I’ll knock off the thin chrome bezel around the head unit, but life gets in the way. This is the Alpine ILX-107. Love everything except the glitchy Apple Maps function when using CarPlay. Aside from that, it’s been great.

    Long Beach CA Repair Question

How many miles? I'd start by looking at obvious things like vacuum hoses, cap/rotor/wire/plugs, etc. If these were fine, perhaps consider injectors. That'd be my plan of attack,

    ICON Stage 3 Kit

I have over 70k miles on my "Stage 3" Icon kit. They've been outstanding. I know the rebuild cycle is supposed to be around 30K, but I subscribe to the "if it ain't broke and leaking, wait till it's broke and leaking" theory. I'd just call up Icon and ask if they have a manufacturing delay...

Speedo Correction - What do you use?

Tool doesn’t have an adjustment for gears, but I’m guessing you’re correct. The speedo sensor is on the transfer case front drive flange, so axle speed is relevant to the diff gear ratio. I think the plan is to program the second set of wheels at OEM size, then trim the percentage to get it exact.

Speedo Correction - What do you use?

Reviving this thread. Have had a Marks4WD in the drawer for several years, but just got around to installing it yesterday. I’m running 37s with 4:88 gears on my ‘97. “Program 1” (OEM tire size) is set to 275/70r16. “Program 2” is set to 37x17. My speedo is way off on Program 2, but seems pretty...

    1FZ-FE exhaust - finally

I am running a Delta rear bumper. If I had a plastic bumper, I think this routing could pose more of an issue. As it is now, the exhaust routes to nearly the edge of the bumper, so most of the exhaust gas flows out the side or up through the wheel arch (when the vehicle is stationary). One of...

    1FZ-FE exhaust - finally

My solution on the tailpipe, if it is of value. Tried running without the rear resonator, but the whistling drove me crazy. Ended up reinstalling and rerouting. Very happy with the outcome. Aside from the stainless turndown, all the tubing is reclaimed bends from the factory system.

SOLD  1997 1FZ short block (SoCal)

Popped a head gasket. Pulled motor. Decided that a factory new short block wasn't all that much more than rebuilding the existing short block, which I figured was worth doing since the motor had 250K and was already out of the truck. Now I have an extra short block. Had high hopes of doing...

    Subtle steering wobble while braking

Appreciate the input. I just stepped up to 37" tires, and though I can't pinpoint that as a moment I began to notice the wobble, the timing is suspect. Entirely possible that the added diameter of the wheels is exacerbating an already worn or misadjusted wheel bearing. I'll jump into the hub...
