Quick update…..acquired an OEM stock fuel pump and finally got around to the install. I did check to be sure no blockages in lines from the fuel tank and all was well there. Turns out that the feed line into the old pump had a small hole/slit in it caused by an overtightened hose clamp….so...
If I recall….the top of the filler neck has two mounting screws to the body/bed (inside the door)….the other bracket down the neck is something that should be attached to the metal filler neck but if not you likely can fab up something to provide a little stability…..it won’t be seen unless...
You are making great progress…..I finally got that picture underneath my carb fan showing the mount and the wiring loom attachment. Photo attached. The lines you have under the body are mostly ‘vapor’ lines that go from the fuel tank to a plastic vapor recovery ‘tank’ that fits inside the...
My bad….there is actually a bracket below the carb fan….supports from the bottom and the top of the fan housing bolts to the side engine bay panel……from looking inside the cab under the pedal tree…..there is only two bolts used and the thired one you showed doesn’t have anything in it on my truck.
I don’t know what that bracket is or if it goes there…..my 79FJ40 has no such bracket. Attached photos show my driver side area below the brake master……my carb cooling fan mounts to the side fender rail and pulls air in from the vent louvers.
Interesting alternative…..but for $500 I think a new insert into the tank is another option. As you can see from this photo of when I had the tank prep‘d and ready to reinstall during my resto work….the inlet/return fitting is made into a removeable ‘bung’ that is fixed with a gasket and few...
Quick update…..today I ran an small auxiliary tank/line directly to the stock mechanical fuel pump….disconnected the output line at the carb and put in a container…..cranked…and cranked the engine…..no fuel at all. Will go with the stock mechanical fuel pump for now to get it back on the...
Thanks for tips……I have checked the oil and thankfully no issues there. Vent cap is fine as well….I was able to use a hand pump and pull gas from the supply lines without any resistance/problem….I have the stock evaporator and vent lines installed so tank does not appear to be building up a...
Good insight…..I read your posts on the EFI…..very informative/helpful. If I go that route I’m going to try to do a video/photo trail so I can post on this forum. For desmogging….I assume you pulled the smog pump, EGR, air rail, etc. and “cleaned up“ the look under the hood. My first FJ40...
Thanks…..I rebuilt the top end of the carb a few months back….so the float and all are all working. I confirmed no gas getting to the carb ——had disconnected the supply line at the carb and cranked the engine repeatedly……nothing came out. That’s when I pulled the battery and tray to get at the...
Thanks for feedback……I had this “stock or resto-mod” discussion with myself about the time I started the restoration 12+ years ago…..decided the stock route since I had formerly had a 1963 Corvetter roadster many years prior and kept that stock as well….at the time it was a major no-no to mod a...
I’ve got a question in here so bare with me….first some background to help folks respond.
I did a full frame off resto on my 79FJ40 about 10 years ago…..literally everything was rebuilt or replaced back to factory original. Took me two years to do all the work. Truck has factory power...
fjc man is correct …..although my is currrently disconnected. The return line to your tank from your stock fuel pump follows the inside frame rail. The line you are pointing to goes up and over the back of the engine over to the carb area……I’ve seen that in other pics of my old setup before I...
If I can help just drop me a note…..I did a full frame off restoration of a 1979 FJ40 about 10 years ago….still have the truck. I have tons of ’take a part’ pictures and ‘rebuild’ pictures as well. If not already mentioned get yourself one of the Haynes manuals or better yet the Toyota factory...
Thanks zerotreedelta…..nice work on the brackets. While adjusting the timing with the Sniper would be “nice” its not a deal killer with me staying stock dizzy…..my timing light still works. 😬
Ga Architect….reviewed the original post you linked for me…..excellent work! If you have some pictures of how you hooked up/fab’d the accelerator pedal/cable that would be nice to see. Also why did you change out your dizzy? I’ve heard about changing over to HEI ‘one wire’ distributor that...
Thanks guys…..very helpful. Since I do have one of the “newer” 40s with the return line…..I’ll do the frame rail install with the Walbro….heard a lot of positive stuff about them. I’ll be checking out the links provided……and of course more questions likely to follow. Thanks again! 👍
