Turns out my fears of a great box problem were unfounded. It was simply the throwout bearing. Had never heard one that sounded like a prehistoric flying dinosaur! Of course it damaged the clutch too but with 80k + on it SOP should be to do the whole job while you got apart anyway. All is good.
Hey guys, thanks for the info. Part of what concerned me was if I had to have any special service tools to get any part of the job done. I've never gotten in to a steering knuckle and don't know all of what to be prepared for. I can generally always tear down and reassemble most anything but I...
Hey all, been a long time since I've been here. I've got an 85 FJ60 swapped in with a Chev 87 motor and the two speed Ranger torque splitter/OD.
The problem started with hints of noise down under quickly graduating to a pretty horrible screeching. With both the splitter and the transmission in...
Just an update on this thread. Success!
Thanks go out to MikeAM for helping me diagnose this problem correctly. I bought the $56 signal generator (also called distributor pickup coil) from Rock Auto. It was the best price I could find.
Just installed it and long after its usual habit of...
Thanks Mike, it sounds like your symptoms are mine.
Where do you suggest looking for a better deal than Spector?
Anybody else know where I could find these parts?

Ok, thanks for the advice but I'm still having the issues.
After I first posted I tried swapping in a spare igniter which did not fix the problem. I reconnected the original igniter and the next morning I started it again and let it idle for about 20-30 minutes until it quit. With some help...
Hey guys, haven't posted in a while but I need some advice about my stock '87 2f.
Several times now, and out of the blue, after about 20 minutes +/- of driving the motor just quits like you've turned the key off. No sputtering, faltering, or stumbling. Just dead. Cannot start the motor for...
Aside from pulling your buddy out at the beach I had the same scenario with my '87. Oil pressure would drop at high rpm and then come back up when I slowed down. Actually, it was an intermittent problem. I first changed the oil & filter but that didn't help. I finally ordered another sending...
Elbert,
I just got back to the computer to give an update on my A/C. Thanks for the links. I have read them before and learned about the possibility of the tach wire but was still unsure and is why I asked.
Anyway, it’s hooked up and working.
Since I was relatively sure I just needed the...
Well, after enjoying the V8 swap in my 85 FJ60 for about a year now, I finally got off my rear end and got the A/C part of my project almost complete. I’ve had all the components needed gathered together for some time now and all I needed to do was get the TLC hoses adapted to the GM...
Man I love this forum!
I was about 300 miles from home at the end of a 2600 mile Christmas trip to California. (My new TBI 350 Chev performed quite well.) I realized I was hearing a 'bad vibration' whenever I'd back off the gas just enough to let the drive train float. All the worst case...
I just uploaded a couple of pics of the elk to my public profile. It was a good one all right. In 37 years best any of my clients ever got. Gross 396 B&C.

Yep. Pretty much why I couldn't convince myself to go that route. If there was a way to do it with the configuration of a conventional spacer I would have given it more thought.

So far so good on the Ranger and I’ve not heard any bad about it. When you run it in OD you get a bit of gear noise in the lower gears but hardly noticeable in 4th where it’s used most anyway. I called and confirmed that’s normal. It winds up giving you extra versatility in your gearing -...
W,
Like others have said, if you're in dire straights to get back on the road again don't compromise on your cruiser to hurry it up. An inexpensive economical DD you can sell later would give you the time to do the cruiser the way you want it.
The numbers you quoted for a rebuilt 2f and the...
It can be done. Search around for '6 to 8 lug wheel adapters' and you should find sources. I was in the same boat and wondered if I could use the numerous eight lug wheels I already had.
What I found was the minimum thickness for the spacer was 2". No less. Not only that but they are...
