    V8 carb. recommendation?

Electronic Fuel Injection is THE answer..!!! A simple throttle body injection system will continue to run after you flop (better have a kill switch) Someone could make a lot of $$$$ if they developed a "low performance", simple, one or two barrel injection system for "non-smogged" vehicles...

    cable locker

OX makes a cable operated locker. I believe these lockers are designed for Dana 30 and Dana 44 (Dana 60 is next?) only. The shift fork is in diff cover. I don't believe OX has made anything for a 3rd member style diff (ford 9", toyota, etc)... If you find out differently, post it.!!!

Any one completly rewire there fj40 with painless kit

One other point: solder, solder, solder all permanent connections... all other connections should use auto grade bulkhead connectors... do not use "crimp-on" or screw type connectors, they are a high failure risk...!!!

Any one completly rewire there fj40 with painless kit

Yes, I used a Painless 18 circuit "street rod" harness (fuse block is in the rear of vehicle). I think the painless documentation could be better, but the actual harness is top quality. I recommend starting simple: lay the harness in the vehicle (do not tie down wires or cut them yet), wire...

    Gearing and T-case Advice

What a great problem to have... how to spend your disposable income... It seems to me, six of the key considerations for major drive train modifications are: engine performance (EFI, cooling requirements, torque at low RPM's, etc.), overall fitment (engine position, drive line lengths, etc.)...

    ARB Install question...

$1200.00..??? are they gold plating the ARB's..??? A competant mechanic (with ARB experience) can easily set one up in three hours... at $80/hour that's only $240 per diff (and there is virtually no material costs if you already own the ARB's.... if you don't do it yourself, get more...

    ARB Install question...

I'm not in Boise (NorCal), but have installed a pair of ARB's... there are some excellent tech articles on the web with tips, photos, etc..... Here's my feeling on doing your own ARB's... If you are ONLY replacing the carrier and carrier bearings, you will need only basic tools, drill motor...

    electronic ignition

Question: When you removed your old dist., you cranked the engine to TDC on the #1 cylinder on the Compression stroke...??? I have seen folks confuse the TDC on the exhaust stroke with the Compression Stroke and be WAAAAYYYY out of time...!!! I an no Dist expert, but have never had an issue...

    CA Smog?

This is a really tough question.... All I can say for certain, is that is depends. The DMV in Cali is similar to the Iraqi Republican Gaurd. Everyone lives in fear of them, but when it comes down to it, they are as disorganized and worthless as a group of people could be.... The system can...

    Recommendations on Radiators

Now that summer is here, and the 1972 FJ40 is FINALLY "off road", the 403 CUIN V8 needs more cooling. I want to purchase a new radiator (highest possible effeciency). Size is the concern. I have a Power Steering Gear Box mounted just to left (drivers side) of the stock radiator mount...

    Third member Removal (Studs)

Oil drained. Both axles removed (drivers side and passenger side). All nuts are off the 3rd member mounting studs. The drive line has been disconnected. I have heard of folks placing a floor jack under the 3rd member out near the input flange, jack up moderatly and wait, the 3rd member will...

    Exhaust system for v8 fj40

It's all relative to how much time and $$$$ you are willing to spend... I love to fabricate in steel... so the only choice for me was a hand made set of tuned headers that fit, are turned, and put the muffs between the frame rails... Lots of folks sell header kits on line...

Hanging On The Harmonica (Harmonic Balancer)

What am I missing...??? Trying to remove the Harmonic Balancer off my Olds 403 V8... The manual says it should have been torqued to 310 Ft-Lbs... I have laid into it with well over 400 and nothing.... This thing is not left hand threaded, right??? I have sprayed the "area" with...

Switching Front and Rear Diff U-joint Flanges

Yes, both are coarse spline and swapped out no big deal... I had hoped this would be the case, but I needed psychological reassurance... Thanx, Again

Switching Front and Rear Diff U-joint Flanges

Are the front and rear differential propellor shart companion flanges interchangable? I rebuilt two 3rd members (Both ARB Full Floaters, did not replace Ring and pinion), and after installing 3rd members and axles, I realized that I swapped the Front 3rd member to the rear and visa-verce...

Gasket or RTV for FJ40 3rd members ??

Re: Gasket or RTV ?? just had the better luck with sealing with copper than blue or black.... but my question is specific to FJ40 3rd members.... Did not know if the gasket is critical to axle alignment or ring gear clearance to the axle housing....
