    fuel tank bubbling noise

When the tank cools off it sucks air in through one of the lines and it bubbles up through the gas in the tank. It's meant to do that to relieve the vacuum as the gas cools off.

    pinion seal and power steering

Could be he means pitman seal, the seal on the pitman shaft. My '84 leaked from the steering gear input shaft seal until I used PS stopleak.

    Emissions Woes...I need help!!!

Make sure your cat is real hot before the guy starts the test. Run it at 2500 rpm for a few minutes then let it idle and start the test. Make sure all the jets and air bleeds in the carb are not clogged. Make sure the two rubber donut things at the top of the main metering jets are there and...

    mystery noise

I ran my '84 without the thermostat for a while and on the freeway the rad fan would come on every time I went up a hill, even a slight one. The hot water constantly running through the rad would make the fan come on. Putting in a stat stopped it. Now on the freeway it only comes on if the...

    Radiator - burp again

I have the same problem and I've been working on it for quite a while. It's as if the thermostat doesn't open very much and the temperature at the back of the engine (where the temperature sender is) climbs until finally the thermostat opens and then it all cools down. It does this more on...

    4Low to 2Low?

I think one reason the factory didn't allow 2wd low is the chance of breaking the rear end from too much torque. I did that once on an IH Scout. I modified my '84 FJ60 about 15 years ago to allow 2wd low and have never looked back. I use it nearly every day, any time I want to go slow...

Top speed to shift in 4wd

I totally agree with this. But you should adjust the air pressure in the front/rear tires so that the front and rear drive shafts are running at the same speed. You can check this on a straight road at speed by shifting the xfer halfway into 4wd, to the point where the gears just touch each...

    Steering clunk

I traced my steering clunk to the slip joint between the two u-joints in the engine compartment. It's the shaft between the u-joints and is like a spline but square as I remember. Probably some grease would fix it but it looked like a lot of work to take it apart and I never bothered. Karl

    Voltage regulator question

The brushes in the alternator also wear out, and then it won't charge. Brushes are cheap, <$10 at a good auto parts store. Putting them in is a bit of work, you need a soldering iron. But it costs a lot less than an alternator. I always carry a spare set. Karl
