The Skid Plates - Full Body Protection

Some of you may have been following a post where I was building some skid plates. Anyway, here they are and these are some bad dudes. They weigh about 40lbs each and are 1/4" carbon steel. I will be adding gussets to the tranny plate. Would there be interest in buying these if I made more...

80 Series Transfer Case Skid Plate: Its Alive!

Thanks to some of the folks here on MUD that helped me with some data to develope this skid plate for the transfer case. There are other skid plates out there of course, but I really did not find one like this. This is on a 1994 model so I really don't know if it fits all 80's. I notched the...

Project Clortho: Front end tear down, replace the Birf's?

I picked up a '94 FZJ last month (nick named Mr. Clortho) and am working it over on my way to a full restore so that I can be buried in the rig in about 40 years if I live that long. So, my mentality is to do it right and make it new if I am going to get into it because I plan on putting 200k+...

I am looking for the following for a grey interior: 1. The passenger side, rear door, floor piece (the snap down piece that goes on the door seal on the floor that covers the gap between the carpet and the door (not the foot pad thing). 2. The dash bezel (the black plastic frame on the dash...

Fabricating Skid Plates: Bolt sizes on Tranny Crossmember Support???

Hey folks, I am designing skid plated for my '94. They are belly style and one will cover from the transmission crossmember forward to the sway bar and the other from the crossmember back to the muffler. I have them drawn up in 3D Autocad and a buddy who will be fabricating them. I am...

High End Audo System - Grade me on my plans

I have put together and installed about 20 systems now and so please grade me on my componets for my FZJ-80 that I am putting together. There are a dozen choices for everything but I am pretty set on the head unit. Head Unit: Alpine CDA-117 (Front, Rear, SW 4v RCA outs) Speaker Amp: Kicker...

Re-wire of my 80, are these factory wires (pic)?

Howdy, I picked up a 1994 80 about three weeks ago and am going though the rig with a fine tooth comb. I don't want any surprises on the trail so I have to 'know' the condition of every piece and I started in on the wiring inspection last weekend. I found a nightmare of epic perportions and...

Advice for a Noob: How far should I go on a rear end rebuild?

I am an 80 noob but not a noob to the FJ. Anyway, I bought a '94 (121k miles) and discovered the rear pinion seal was shot. Who knows how long it had been and it had leaked all of the grease it was going to. I spent some time on this site searching and learning and have a decision to make...

Missing switch: Is this the diff lock?

OK, before you destroy me with the 'thou shalt use the search' punches, I did and it is how I figured out this stuff...I think. I am an 80 newb. I bought this 1994 80 and there is a hole in the dash just left of the steering wheel with a white, quick connector hanging out. I assume that this...

Time for Another FJ40, Want Advise on Year to Choose

Ease back search Gestapo, I spent an hour 'searching'. My '80 FJ40 has been gone for a couple of years now and I am finally getting myself in the financial position to get another one. Please throw some comments at me like stinky cheese at a bad play. Mostly, I am looking for the 'ideal'...

Pro Comp Lift on the '06 Taco

Is anyone running Pro Comp's new lift kit on their 05-06 Taco? I have had mixed feelings about Pro Comp over the years. I had their 6" on a full size Bronco and it was really nice but their leafs seem to be pretty crappy. Also, I wouldn't buy their junk 3000 series shocks and this lift is a...

My Quest for a Better Riding FJ40…Success

Maybe this will help someone someday find a solution in there Cruiser’s ride quality. My 40 is the worst riding vehicle that you can imagine. It bounces, leans, and the tires will even come off the ground on some rough streets. It feels like your head is going to come off when you roll over...

Me 40 is down again…Ideas, suggestions?

As usual for me, this will be long winded… Problem: The previous owners, God bless them, have made a hellish mess of many things on my 40 but especially the electrical system. At any given time, I would loose head lights, blinkers, tail lights, etc… but now a new problem has cropped up...

For those who run a bikini top

If my befuddled brain actually generates a fairly good idea, I get all giddy and stupid and have to share the madness..... If you run with a bikini top all of the time like I do, it is because you want to be able to remove and install it quickly on a daily or weekly basis. But, the...

    Have diff. leak-need help

I am a bit of a noob and have never cracked a differential. My rear diff is leaking and it looks like it is coming from the front of the diff. Is this most likely the pinion seal? Can you help me identify which part it is in this SOR diagram? Is it simply 41? Thanks!!

    Aluminum vs Steel Fenders

I have been reading up on body pieces as the ole FJ40 needs some serious TLC in that department. I have found steel, aluminum and fiberglass replacement fenders both in stock size or about 3" wider than stock. I like the idea of fiberglass, but don't like the thought when I bang it against a...

FJ leaning to one side, suggestions to fix?

My FJ leans noticibly to the driver side. Do you think that it is a sagging spring? I would guess that it would be the driver side front. I was thinking about installing a 1" longer shackle on that side to level it out. Is this a really dumb idea?

    Dumb Fuel pump question

Dumb question of the day #1:  Does my '80 FJ40 actualy have an electric fuel pump? I was looking at the wiring and tracing them and ended up at something that look a whole lot like a fuel pump. Sorry for being dumb but I am used to the mechanical type like in old V8's.
