A quick list of updates from the last year or so...
-Replaced transmission cooler with a larger Deraile unit (required removing the factory roll up screen behind the grill)
-Swapped in stainless brake lines on the front axle (bypassing the dust shield to take one step out of the next knuckle...
Still haven't determined the root cause, but I have collected all the bits I need to pull the head (again) and see what I find.
-ARP head studs in the hopes they will better hold the head down under load/boost
-3 and 5 notch Toyota head gaskets (3 notch currently, but will measure, then...
Following up on this...
@ToyotaMatt came through with the fusible links I ordered (Thanks Matt!). One installed, one kept as a spare I'll likely never need.
Looking good straight out of the box
Even better installed
Took a while, but finally got the my BJ74 (aka Righty) back on the road after the alternator gave out. One day, the Battery and Filter light came on and I noticed the voltage slowly dropping as I drove. Luckily I wasn't far from my garage, so I didn't get stranded. After poking around with...
Catching up on a few maintenance and clean up things on Righty, my BJ74.
Replaced radiator hoses and every last original coolant hose, especially those with the cotter pin clamps, the toughest being those behind the valve cover near the firewall. Why I didn't do that when the head was off a...
Not sure this will help since @Loober and others have already said vacuum should build up very quickly, but here's a quick video showing how fast my 1990 HDJ81 builds vacuum. Vacuum line, in this case attached to output of the pump.
Note also, I haven't started this truck in over a week and...
Rolled through 55,555.5 miles on the odometer while going ~55 miles per hour in a 55 zone (if towing). Not quite as cool as @cruiserdan with his 222,222.2 pic from his 80, but someday...
Yep! Stock gearing and 33” BFG MTs with probably a bit more than half their tread life remaining. The guys at the speedometer shop should be able to help you calculate the right correction for different gearing. That kind of math is beyond my pay grade for sure!
Super easy to work with these guys perhaps aside from having to call and talk to an actual human. Tell them about your truck and what level of correction you want and they'll assemble an adapter for you. I have 33” tires so went with 1.155 as recommended in the thread linked above (which also...
Came back from a recent solo trip to Death Valley with a list of small things to address on the 60 and knocked some of those out over the holiday.
One of many cold nights crossing Death Valley...in this case on the trail to Tucki Mine
Added tie downs to the rear (hopefully my fridge and other...
That’s an AFR gauge on the left. Truck runs on the rich side pretty much all the time. It runs very well though (unless ~10 MPG is considered), so I haven’t bothered to adjust it. Fully desmogged, no cat, the carb was rebuilt, vacuum is good…so will probably just leave it alone and ignore that...
Installed a Cruiser Head plug and play USB outlet making use of the switch blank to the right of the ashtray. Super easy and quick installation. While I was in there, removed the rear heater switch since I recently deleted the rear heater itself.
Much cleaner look than whatever Amazon...
Addressed a long-standing cooling system issue that recently turned into high temps and slid down a slippery slope that ended in rear heater delete and a secondary coolant temperature gauge installation. Details are in my lazy build thread, but some pics here for those who love pics.
New...
While waiting in line for overpriced gas recently, coolant temps started to creep up to an uncomfortably high level (had previously ALWAYS run cold on the factory gauge). I thought I'd changed the fan clutch and thought I fully went through the cooling when I got Righty, but couldn't find my...
Thanks @ClassyJalopy ! I do have extended sway bar links, so who knows? Perhaps it just got smacked on one too many rocks.
And I hear you on the maintenance interval for the Icons. Their official recommendation is for factory service every 45K miles for street use, 15K for street/dirt...
Headed out to the north rim of the Grand Canyon which has never gone easy on my 100, but is always a fun time.
No more than an hour on the trail outside Mesquite, NV the rear sway bar snapped. Time spent removing the stub was also spent venting the gas tank...as I'm sure most 100 owners know...
@FxFormat , I've got a pair of OEM torsion bars that have been gathering dust for a while here in San Diego. If you're interested and willing to cover the cost of shipping, they're yours! They are heavy, but I can wrap/pack them up and get them on the way this week.
These came from my buddy's...
