Great tip! Thanks! Thjough I'm having a bit of trouble finding a local speedo shop. I guess any shop that specializes in rebuilding factory IP clusters would work.
Thanks for the input, I still like my idea of splicing two different speedo cables together. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it works OK or not. I got the idea by fixing a broken speedo cable by splicing the two broken ends together. It works, I don't see why splicing two different...
Hi just did a search and found out that the TLC speedo cable doesn't fit into the Autometer mechanical speedo guage. Apparently http://www.wejacks.com/guages/index.html sells a cable that works.
Just wondering if anyone else has another homebrew type solution? I've been brainstorming and was...
What are we dealing with here? Stock FJ drivetrain? V8 conversion? Do you have an exhaust pipe running across the bottom of the engine / trans bellhousing area?
Hey great advice! I've got something to add:
Check out a marine store for high quality electrical stuff - like sealed splices and splice packs, 100% water / salt proof shrink tube. etc....
Yup it's almost not worth it to build your own engine nowadays for the price of a crate engine. Whats the warranty now on GM crate motors? 3 years / 160,000k's or something? Used to be 3/80,000k.
Or did GM bump up the SRTA warranty,.... can't remember.
Man thats like asking what color car should you buy ... all personal preference!
Here's my two bits:
Biggest advantage is as someone else mentioned better all round drivability - cold starts, off camber / any angle works good with FI
Fuel injection can control fuel intake at decel ...
GM as far as I know has offered a crate 383 for many years now. But what I meant was that the 383 is not a production engine that GM has put in anything they made ie: right off the assembly line. You can buy a lot of crate engine from GM that you can't find stock in a car or truck.
Whats...
You said it. I'd go with a 400 over a 383 ... GM never really made a production 383 as far as I know and it'll likely be cheaper to build a 400 ... added bonus = more cubes. As for over heating issues, lots of room in front of a V8 Cruiser to take care of that.
Realistically though, I'd just...
Hey thanks for all the great information! I'm so used to getting roasted for newbie questions, this is nice!
Hey thats interesting about the holes on the inner mid-section of the frame. I must have sat under my truck for 15 minutes pondering what it's for trying to figure out if this frame is...
I was always taught that "antisieze DOESN'T BELONG anywhere on an engine" by my shop foreman. I got in s*** for antisiezing engine bolts as an apprentice and just got into a habit of never using the stuff inside an engine. I was taught to thread-chase the threaded holes and wire wheel the bolts...
Well this whole topic of frame flex is something really new to me. I'm used to dealing with small toyota trucks where I don't believe the frame is intended to flex all that much (welded crossmembers and box frame construction).
I don't actually need any frame repairs but I would like to tie...
Thanks for the info ... I kind of figured the C channel and rivets were there for frame flex. But I figured that the wheelbase is so short that frame flex must be minimal at best. Which is good.
Sounds like people have welded onto the frames without much issue.
Hi I'm a new TLC owner - 1980 FJ40, 35", 350+420
Quick question: I'm looking at the frame construction and wondering whats the deal with the C channel and all the rivets. C-channel and rivets makes me think of full size chebby trucks and cracked frames due to years of frame flex.
Looking...
