My '98 New Zealand new LX470 didn't have O2 sensors or cats either, I thought maybe they were missing and that was why it was so thirsty and down on power.... nope turns out that’s how they from the factory.
I fixed it by pulling the engine out.....

Oh and the wife has a 97 3L intercooled diesel Prado, I'm pretty sure it gets better economy than my cruiser. Although she doesn't win as many traffic light grand prix as I do......
I get between 550 and 600km out of 75ish Liters consistently. It's a 1HD-FT with safari intercooler and 3" exhaust, boost is unknown and I'm pretty sure the fueling is stock.
Also... very rarely am I beaten away from the lights, not that it's a race of course.... :)
Really comes down to what you use it for?? Mines used as a daily driver/tow wagon so I've done trans cooler, boost, pyro and trans temp gauges, nearly finished the 3 inch zorst, got the intercooler sitting around patiently waiting to be installed and stereo upgrade.
It's not for hardcore...
I've got, boost, trans temp and pyro. Although the pyro isn't fully hooked up yet.
Boost is for interest sake but the other two are important, especially when towing etc.
If you do bypass the radiator cooler the aux cooler you put in has to be BIG, I did the same thing (bypass the radiator) and went backwards with the tranny cooling. I've now routed it back through the radiator and then the aux cooler and it works well - haven't had any issues since.

I'm curious as to why you'd tow with it in 3rd (unless its up hill of course) Having the tourqe converter locked up in 4th keeps the trans temps much much lower, Plus better economy.
What where the EGTs while towing in 4th?
