1HD-T, is AC pulley on crank required for balancing?

Hi all, I have recently had my AC pulley delaminate and am doing the harmonic balancer now as PM. I am wondering if anyone knows if the AC pulley is actually required for balancing on the 1HD-T, or if it is fine to just run without it all together. The only reason this even occurs to me is due...

    Emergency exhaust repair and restriction

Hey guys, I had my exhaust break in the middle of nowhere on a 1990 HDJ81. It snapped clean off just upstream of the flex pipe in the drivers front wheel well. I managed to patch a new flex pipe in to get me rolling again, but it is slightly smaller diameter than the factory exhaust thats on...

looking for External voltage regulator for 89' LN106

Have been having some charging problems with a new to me pickup with a 3L diesel which led to the discovering of a) the voltage regulator is an unmarked unnamed aftermarket solid state unit and, b) the board was burnt up Im wondering if anyone in Canada/US has had any luck finding alternative...

    Injectors and V-belt Questions BJ41

V-belts do not actually ride in the bottom of the pulley grooves (if they do, the pulley is worn). They sit suspended in the "V" gripping the sides. The "toothed" V belts are just to promote flexibility. As mentioned, I believe the OEM ones are notched, however if its the right dimensions, teeth...

    HDJ81 Air cleaner pipe cracking

Changing air filter and noticed the faint white lines in the "valleys" of the accordion. Do these look like the rubber is on its way out? I know these are quite prone to failure on the gassers due to proximity to the exhaust manifold, but cannot seem to find too many cases of these cracking on...

    Oil cooler/cover casting cracks?

Just noticed these cracks at the oil filter head on 1HD-T oil cooler cover during an oil change. I know aluminum casting can be prone to surface defects, but does this look to be beyond that? I cant think of any other reason that would cause these

    Fuel hose/IP cleanliness (1HD-T)

About to put a new filter housing in, and will be replacing the fuel hose between IP and filter when I do so. Are there any tricks to ensure that new hose is 100% clean before installing? Was thinking hook up to the filter and flush with primer pump/clean fuel into a bucket, then attach to pump...

1HD-T Power steering pump shaft removal?

About to rebuild my power steering pump. How is everyone removing/installing the shaft/bearing assembly on these? I have searched some of the rebuild posts and no one seems to mention much detail about this part. The FSM calls for a fancy SST and press which is probably just as much as a...

    1hd-t power steering pump rebuild

Just about to rebuild my pump this weekend. I dont have access to a fancy press/SST to get the bearing and shaft in and out of the housing. Is everyone just tapping the shaft and bearing in/out of the housing with a punch or drift and dead blow like sandcruiser? That axial stress on the...

    1HD-T Valve Shim intervals

Thanks for the input guys, I think I will run it until spring, then get in there. It does not sound like many have found out of spec below 60K km's. I have to say, this area is +1 for a pushrod/cam-in-block engine with adjustable rocker arms

    1HD-T Valve Shim intervals

Thanks Douglas, +1 for extended interval

    1HD-T Valve Shim intervals

I (think) its getting time for me to inspect/adjust valve clearances on my HDJ81 but the more I research, the more discrepancy I find for a reasonable interval to check them, with opinions anywhere from 20K to 100K km It seems that most find the 20,000 km recommended interval to be overkill...

    1HD-T knock?

This little argument is not helping anything. Should I be inspecting bearings after this? It runs and starts fine and quiet currently, and the bearings are right in the middle of their expected 100K life And thanks IanB, I usually run 5w40 in winters as well, I just have not made my change yet.

    1HD-T knock?

Hey guys, I have an 1990 HDJ81 that sat outside in the cold (-10 - -15C) for about ten days without moving. When I started it, it idled rough so I gave it a wee bit of gentle throttle to help it, however this was likely before oil pressure came up. when I did this, it heard a dull low pitch...

    Busted Tailgate

Hey guys, I bent a tailgate hinge from having it (apparently) overloaded while down on a rough forestry service road. The gate is now stiff to close, and when i push it up, can see some flex in the crossmember that the hinge is bolted in to. Likely due to the leverage/torsion of the gate and...

    Transfer Case Noise

Just pulled everything apart from the inside. Turns out there were 2 random loose screws just hanging out under the shift console against the metal! Possibly the source of my random vibration but that would be way too easy. Worth checking out anyhow! Found another thread on here of a guy who dug...
