real life gas mileage on fj cruiser

Well Dupa I am getting 14 liters / 100 Kilometers for mountain driving, so 11 to 14.5 could be right, although it does seem a bit low. For ya MPGers that's 16.6 (14.5) to 21.8 (11) ;)

    fj40 with a four link

Well since I am considering links, I too would like to know how roadable they are as a front setup. :grinpimp:

    Atlas vs Orion

ah, I understand. Well working it backwards, 55 and 70, with 35'' rubber, OD and 4.88:1 final would be between 2 and 2.5 K rpm, with 4.5:1 it would be 1.8 to 2.3k, hmmm  I've never driven an FJ with a big V8, so is that high? :o

    Atlas vs Orion

And if I keep the Ranger OD (83:1 & 152:1) I also could cruise HW at a decent clip without over-reving the v8 ... road trip! Anyway, if 192:1 is so sick ;) and loosing it is good then why not go to a 4.5:1 (75:1, 95:1, 135:1 & 172:1) or 4:1 (66:1, 84:1, 120:1 & 153:1) final ratio...

    Atlas vs Orion

That's the nice thing :D, it's the final ratio! :bounce: I have a quote with a 2.47 Ring and pinion and a 4.94 final :bounce2:

    Atlas vs Orion

Not really, the Portal-Tek's can be specified with a gear ratio from 3 :1 to 7.33:1

    Atlas vs Orion

Well it would be primarely a off road rig. The street driving would mostly be going to and fro the dirt. Having driven the 420, I know it not the speediest of shifters, by far. I did consider changing it (hell everything else is new), what would you use instead?

    Atlas vs Orion

 Got an SM420 manual Ok so it now Stak vs Atlas, regardless I can specify a center rear diff from Portal-Tek :)

    Atlas vs Orion

I have decided on the portal-tek axles for my FJ40, but not on the replacement of my T/C. With the new axles I obviously could go with an Orion or an Atlas. I'm not asking for much:rolleyes:, I want something for rock crawling, mudding, desert running and street use ;p Any opinion on best...

    Portal axle setup

Thanks Thanks y'all, with your help I have also come to the conclusion that the Portal-tek is probably the best set-up, especially in the long run. OK it is expensive but I think I wrote something about no compromise in a previous post  It has taken me a long time to put together...

    Portal axle setup

Well here's how far I've gotten. Even thought the Mog portals, rebuilt and cut to 61" cost "only" 5790.- a set with disk brakes, they will not clear my oil pan without lift and they require new drive shafts. So exit Mogs:frown:. I allready have an Ranger O/D (1500.-) and the coresponding drive...

    Portal axle setup

... Just had a thought (it happens ): If I use custom portal-teks, I can keep my SM420 and T/C Ha! I could even decide to get Atlas case (sh!t more money :frown:). With "tall" gearing in the axle I'd have nice HW speed at low rpm yet, especially with the new 4sp (sh!t even more...

    Portal axle setup

Thanks for piping in.:bounce2: Your web pages mention a FJ40 kit, yet the quote I have is for two custom axles , I had hoped for a standard (ie. cheaper ) kit. As you probably noticed I am torn between getting your expensive  custom exactly what want axels :D or some...
