question concerning stainless steel bolts and captured nuts

I've been wondering about this for a while now since I have a nice set of stainless steel bolts. Using s/s bolts with carbon steel nuts such as this in the frame or body panels would give an anodic series difference of 0.25 or 0.35, which means the captured nut rather than the bolt will be...

    tool identification

I picked this up at the dump about 15 years ago. It lived on the floor of my garage since then. The manufacturer is William Dixon, Inc of Newark, NJ probably about 100 years ago. I pulled it out today to see if it would curve a strip of sheet metal into a cylinder, but I think it’d need another...

'82 40 Fuel tank strap bolts

Does anyone know the part number for the fuel tank strap bolts for an '82 Fj40, or the dimensions/grade? It seems to be a ~60mm M10 but I'm not certain. I found a part number online, 91611-60820 which has been superseded by 90080-11251, but I'm not at all sure that's correct. Now I see that one...

Engine bay hum at cold start up

Last weekend I changed my oil, and afterwards now I hear a loud hum from the engine bay for about 30 seconds when I start it up in the mornings. It doesn't do it when the engine is started warm. I haven't been able to trace where it's coming from. Anybody recognize this? Thanks, Bill

    Headight question

My DS low beam bulb failed recently, so I went and bought 2 from Toyota. I replaced it and it still didn't work, so I figured maybe it was a bad one and put in the other, still no good. The DS high beam still works, and both on the PS side do. so I'm a little unsure where to look now. The...

    Front axle rebuild question

Ok, this isn't the first time I've done this, but it's frustrating the heck out of me. I've got the axle almost all the way in but it need another inch, so I'm assuming the splines haven't meshed properly. Since I can rotate the shaft only maybe 1/8", I'm assuming the flat spots on the outer...

Full float rear axle shaft length

Does anyone know the exact length of the long side rear axle shaft? It's for an '82 Fj40. I'm going to have to cut the Nitro shaft I bought. thx

    Driveline hum

I've had a pronounced driveline hum for a while now. It sounds like it's coming from the DS front and a moderate right turn will silence it. I've checked the wheel bearings for play but couldn't detect any, so I'm assuming it's coming from the stub axle joint. I've tried manipulating the axle to...

    Broken bolt extraction question

I've got a broken bolt I'm going extract, but need some advice. The bolt is in the firewall end of the intake manifold and stands about 1/16" proud. I'm going use my tig to build it up and weld on a nut, but I'm worried about the localized heat cracking the cast iron. Should I preheat it, or is...

    Aisan carb rebuild problem

I'm pretty much through the disassembly and cleaning part of the rebuild, but I find that one of the butterfly shafts is very tight and difficult to turn. I'm planning to try light oil, but am wondering if there's something else I ought to do. It's the right hand one in the pic.

    Electrics question

I've been wanting to upgrade the power in my garage for the last two decades. It has a single 15amp 110v circuit, so when I'm welding I have to run a heavy extension cord into the house to reach a 30amp 110 outlet. Underneath my workbench there's wall-mounted junction box at the end of some...

2008 GX470 Front Wheel Bearing replacement

I need to replace the PS front wheel bearing on my 2008. I picked up the parts from Toyota yesterday: bearing assembly with 4 bolts inner o-ring outer seal I've read the FSM on it, but, being a fundamentally lazy person and short on time, am wondering if it can be swapped in without removing...

Anybody parting a 62 near Boston?

At a minimum to pass inspection, I need a PS headlight door. It doesn't have to be pretty, just solid. I'm in the NW suburbs. Thanks, Bill

    FS: New Slee FJ60/62 Sliders

I bought these sliders for my 62 a couple of years ago. They're new and fabulous, still wrapped. See them here: <http://www.sleeoffroad.com/products/60_sliders.htm> I planned to clean and paint my frame rails before bolting them on, but managed to bang up both sides of my truck after...

    Rare cruiser sighting

Saw a Dune beaige 4/84 FJ40 in a garage lot nearby. It was being transshipped somewhere. Looked completely stock and unrestored with no meaningful corrosion in any of the likely places. It had stock chrome bezel, chrome bumperettes, plaid cloth seat covers, and full float rear axle - no cable...

    power steering pressure line

Anyone know if there is enough clearance to remove the two frontmost clamp bolts for the pressure line on an FJ62 without removing the radiator support pieces? I've got the radiator out right now (for other reasons) and have a replacement for my pretty rusted line which I'd like to install...
