Early Door lock (1969) Key not releasing

Catfish- thank you. Your guidance helped me greatly and saved me possibly buying a second lock I didn’t need. For me it was a combination of a few issues. Not understanding how fj40 locks work, not having the inside lock finger tab tight enough ( there needs to be a little friction and...

Early Door lock (1969) Key not releasing

It seems whatever I do can’t get the key to exit any position other than 12 o clock. Catfish- your key now releases at 12 and 3 o clock positions? Just clarifying… When you say that “opening vice on one of the ends what do you mean?” I think my lock may be faulty because I’ve tried to...

Early Door lock (1969) Key not releasing

Trying to diagnose why my door lock doesn’t work. I have a 1969 with a very primitive lock mechanism. The key only releases in the 12 o clock position ( is that a faulty lock cylinder?) and I need it to release in the 6 o clock locked position. I could have bought the wrong lock cylinder. I saw...

    1980 BJ43L-KCJW Euro Spec Project!

Very nice! Wish I had a 3b in mine. Interesting tires, what made you choose them?

    From Rancho to Alcan, Wow!

Pulled rear driveshaft to make working on the rear shims a little easier but mainly wanted to check spline engagement to make sure I don’t drop a driveshaft at full droop. I started by marking where driveshaft sits at ride height with yellow tape, removed driveshaft and measure 2.75 inches of...

    From Rancho to Alcan, Wow!

Spent the day finishing up the lift and installing shocks. Many small tasks to attend to. Wanted to address caster angle as I felt I lost a little driveability lifting the truck an additional 2.5 inches. I also wanted to address my pinion angle as my new lift has also changed driveline angles...

    From Rancho to Alcan, Wow!

These are 37’s. These shackles are 4 inch eye to eye, why do you think I would need longer? Will definitely confirm I have enough splines engaged, thanks! Did consider but opted against. Have a toolbox welded into rear floor that I want to keep and prevents me from moving axle back more than...

    From Rancho to Alcan, Wow!

Just got done putting 5 inch lift custom Alcan leaf springs in the cruiser today! I’ve only driven it around without shocks to shake down and measure for shocks but I’m super impressed at how flexible and soft the springs are. Going from Rancho 2.5 lift springs night and day difference! 4 plus...

Bilstein shocks for 5 inch lift

Just placed an order for custom 5 inch lift springs from Alcan spring. Going from a Rancho 2.5 inch lift that sucks I’m excited to feel the difference in ride quality and flex! Will the Bilstein shocks designed for a 4 inch lift kit work with a 5 inch lift kit or do I need longer shocks? I...

    Adding FJ40 rear storage “trunk”

As we all know FJ40’s don’t have any storage. I’ve been thinking of adding some type of storage box for awhile. I wanted a box large enough to store fluids/recovery gear/tools and emergency supplies. Needed to fit between frame rails and doesn’t hang super low. Also wanted it low enough I...

Where to ARB Twin compressor on 40?

I was originally thinking I was gonna mount in the engine bay next to my battery but am now considering under the drivers seat in the toolbox area. The pros to under seat are less heat, more sheltered, more centralized for the hose, and I don’t look broken down with my hood up every time I’m...

How much grinding? 4 runner calipers/OEM rims?

Farmboy- swap is v6 sr5 4Runner calipers from a 1995. Requires backing plate trimming or backing plate eliminator kit (what I used). Also requires grinding down of cooling fins or wheel spacers to fit stock steelies.

How much grinding? 4 runner calipers/OEM rims?

I’m doing the v6 caliper swap on my 40. Calipers in question are from a 1995 4 runner SR5 (equal size pistons). I know I need to grind the fins to get the wheels to fit. Is this enough? Pictures show caliper before grinding and one after…

Building Front axle to handle 37s

Moto Farkles bash plate and low range off-road axle ball gussets and steering stops. I welded everything over a period of 4-5 different days and am happy nothing warped. Picture of new steering arm vs old. New arms are already mulled for ruff stuff 1 ton kit. Wasn’t planning on going to 6...

Building Front axle to handle 37s

Bought some 37inch TSL SX tires for my wheelin rig. As soon as they arrived I knew I may have bitten off more than my little axles can chew. Here is a shot of the size difference between my 33s and 37s. The weight difference is huge. The axle has been completely unmaintained and needed...

Front axle rebuild questions for the gurus…

Are you not adding the shims to the bottom to center the knuckle, but the top shims under the steering arm are to add/subtract knuckle bearing preload ( I.e. if you remove shims it increases preload and if you add it decreases).?

Front axle rebuild questions for the gurus…

First questions regarding trunion bearing preload. Do most people re-install the shims that came out of there knuckle or go with the rebuild kit shims? My trunion bearing preload pull-test was at 3lbs only before disassembly. Do I attribute that low number to worn bearings ( they were worn) or...

    Axle Rebuild Brake Upgrade question

Rebuilding front axle completely on my FJ40. Wanting to upgrade to v6 calipers and rotors ( installing backing plate eliminators). Already have Fj80 master installed. Brakes work great but I would like to upgrade calipers to balance out large bore Monte Carlo calipers on the rear. The parts I...

    Rotor ID and removal

Can someone please identify the rotors on my FJ40. They are the 6 hole (not 8) and vented. What years land cruiser had this rotor? Just trying to make parts store run painless… Also… Without a press, the accepted way to remove rotor from hub is putting on blocks of wood and pounding the hub...
