    Grinding noise in front axle

    The spindle bushing wasn't pressed all the way in. Whoever did the previous rebuild did not notice and couldn't reinstall the C-clip on the outer shaft. I suppose this allowed the axle to travel in and the abs ring was doing the grinding. The pics aren't great but here's one with the axle removed.

    Front axle/ds grinding noise, stumped

    I had a simular issue but mine wound up being the c-clip on the driver's side wasn't installed on the outer shaft. It was allowing the axle to move too far in and grind against the housing. It may be worth a couple minutes to pull the dust cover off and check.

    Thanks for all the help. Found the problem. Spindle bushing was not pressed all the way in. Got it back together. All is well !!!!! I don't know if you can tell in the pic but it was getting close to cutting into the lower bearing race.

    Brakes are good. Nothing loose. As I mentioned before the outer c-clip was off and in the dust cap. I tore the drivers side down and it looks like the ABS ring has been rubbing the housing. Could the axle have moved in and hung up in some way. I couldn't pull it out before to install the c-clip...

    Thanks for the reply. I'm going to check the calipers this weekend. I'm hoping that's what it is and that seems to be where the noise is coming from. The drive plate looks good. Is there any damage that can be caused by the shorter birfield? Especially since the c-clip can't be installed...
