That is correct. But there are parts to allow the T-case from a 3-speed to accept the output shaft from the 4-speed transmission. I don't recall the full list, but there was at least an input gear for the t-case.
When I did my swap from the 3-speed to the 4-speed transmission, I kept my 3-speed...
Whoa. It's the end of an era. But whoever buys the Karma Cruiser will be starting a new chapter for an amazing Cruiser.
Having seen the Karma Cruiser in action, it is a fantastic rig. And lots of little details that make it even better.
An obligatory picture of the Karma Cruiser. @65swb45...
Took the 40 for the post-brake-work test drive: stops straight and true and braking power is back to where it should be.
And I gave it a quick spray wash at the local car wash. It likely had been a couple years since I last cleaned the exterior.
Earlier in the week found no pressure on the brake pedal and discovered the front reservoir had gone dry.
Did the only reasonable thing in response. Fully adjusted the brakes and flushed the lines with a pressure bleeder. Well 3/4 of them. The front left wheel cylinder bleed screws were seized...
Installed at set of Koito H4 headlamps.
I still need to update my battery cable clamps for ones with accessory mounts to install the dedicated wiring harness. But even without the harness improvement in lighting is noticeable.
Of course while aiming the headlights, I noticed a front side...
They would need to be left and right specific.
If I recall correctly there are slight differences in window opening size varying by year. And there are variations in the size of the opening in the side panel. I know I ran into this problem when I tried to put BJ42 sliders on my 1974 FJ40, and I...
Just drove it and filled it up with non-ethanol gas.
With some cracking starting to appear on the coolant hoses, I'm starting to plan out what other things I want to get done while I have the coolant drained.
Did some rust migration on the front cowl before it had a chance to get more invasive. Thankfully when dremeling down to metal, I found that rust hadn't progressed below the seam. Looks like I caught it in time.
Two coats of rust converter. Need to get a new color matched rattle can (because my...
Took the 40 out to the local cars and coffee. Noticed this when I went out to start it.
Looks like I'm going to need to get a jump on rust mitigation before it becomes a real PITA to deal with. It's not the rustiest part of the truck, but definitely a spot that can get really hard to deal with...
I removed the cross member when I did my transmission swap. I cut it cleanly out along the frame rails with the intent to reinstall it. But I never did and ended up scrapping it when I moved to a different state.
I have the stove only, not the full kit, but have been impressed. I picked mine up as a used item at REI, it had been returned saying the regulator wasn't letting the propane through. A couple minutes to rebuild the regulator (spring had become unseated jamming it closed) with a SAE socket (3/8"...
I must have forgot which of the shift (Hi-Lo vs 2WD-4WD) failed (it was nearly 20 years ago now). Regardless it got disengaged somehow.
I'm partial to mechanical linkages...preferably with as few links as possible between the lever and what is being actuated.
Having converted my 1974 (10/73 build date) which came with the J30 as 3 on the floor to a later H42 4 on the floor, I am much happier with the 4 speed. The gearing just seems right for the FJ40. From feel and sound you know when to up shift and the next gear is right where it should be for...
I'm still around. But I haven't been making those kits for a while. It was much more time intensive than I had expected.
I haven't been able to locate the box with the left overs from back when I made those kits. I took a look this morning and it wasn't in any of the suspected locations in my...
Speaking of pizza cutters on stock rims, took mine on a trail for the first time in...well lets just say far too long. The tires are getting up there age wise but show no cracking or dry rot.
I might eventually get around to jetting the carb for altitude (as opposed to sea level), definitely...
That looks much better. @65swb45, Did you grind off the rivets and then just shift the hanger back so that the front hole on the hangar lines up with the rear hole on the frame? And of course drill a new hole for the rear hanger mount hole.
Any reason to not just rotate the hangar so the eye is...
Spent yesterday cutting and assembling the FarmTek chicken coop flooring for the roof rack floor. Installed the flooring today.
Using 1-1/2" OD fender washers for primary anchoring. UV stabilized heavy duty zip ties for secondary (rattle reduction) anchoring. I had to drill some new mounting...
Picked up a Con-Fer basket locally for cheap.
Cleaned up the rust, painted it with rust reformer and semi-gloss enamel and mounted it.

I'm going to put the chicken coop flooring in sometime soon.
