    Oil filter selection

The holes release the pressure. That plus letting it drain overnight does the trick!

    Oil filter selection

If you have the time, punch a hole or two into the filter, let drain overnight, filter comes off bone dry in the morning. For the price, can't go wrong with OEM filters. Also pick up a OEM filter wrench and extra long socket extension to make this a one hand tied behind back job.

    Brake Light Issues

Thanks pimp, just unplugged the sensor and the light turned off. Think I'll go order a new one tomorrow. Still don't understand why the brake light only turns off when she's warmed up. The ground wire looked okay. Hopefully this fixes it.

    Brake Light Issues

Tapage, please elaborate. Are you talking about the button that deactivates the brake light when the handle is lowered? If so, then yes and it only seems to work when the Cruiser is warmed up.

    Brake Light Issues

So I'm having issues with the e-brake light on the dash of my 89 FJ62:  The brake light will stay on until I drive the Cruiser around for 10-15 minutes. Once warmed up it will turn off both on start up and driving but... When making either a hard right or left...

    water temp sending unit question

What's the easiest way to replace the water temp sending unit on a 3FE? I'm hoping to avoid draining the rad. Can I just disconnect the upper hose? Looks like that will help me access it as well.

    tail pipe size?

More torque means more strain on our old engines. I think 2.5" is a happy medium allowing more breathing room without losing a lot of back end pessure. You can always adjust your idle to help you off the line. I just upgraded to 2.5" pipe from the headers back and couldn't be happier! Just my .02.

orange colored speedo lube on connector

Just disconnected the speedo cable from the speedometer and found an orange colored lube on the connectors. Should I be concerned? Should I clean it off and relube?

temp gauge running a tad high should I worry?

Yeah, I've never done it myself but have read others on this board have had success with it. I guess it acts as a fail safe way to keep the tstat from getting stuck. Not sure if any of these members live in smog states. Just trying to keep the old engine as cool as possible.

temp gauge running a tad high should I worry?

Brand new OEM waterpump installed less than a month ago but something to remember next time I have to swap out both (hopefully not for another 15+ years). Is there an OEM combo for the FJ62? I've seen them for the 60s.

temp gauge running a tad high should I worry?

Turns out I have a bad fan clutch. Damn aftermarket! I've learned my lesson. I'm getting an OEM fan clutch next week from the dealer and replacing the water temp sending unit at the same time just to be safe. I'll burp the system as well. On a side note, I was told by my local rad shop that...

temp gauge running a tad high should I worry?

That's what I figured. Don't think the PO ever replaced it along with every other part! I'll give a update after I replace it.

temp gauge running a tad high should I worry?

Both in town and on the freeway my temp gauge levels off about a tick above the 2/3 mark. I just put in a new rad (performance), hoses, water pump, fan clutch and t-stat. Seems a tad high for a new cooling system especially when I read that others are at the 1/4 mark. When I blast the heater...

    FJ62 exhaust questions

Could be that you're running too rich. I upgraded to 2.5" pipes and had the same problem. Fixed it by putting the rig on a Dyno with a tail pipe sniffer and adjusted the air fuel mixture screw until the numbers passed Smog. What's the temp reading of the exhaust? Mine is in the upper 400 range...

    Overheating cat with upgraded exhaust

It sounds like the cat is working correctly but can anyone explain the discoloration on the shell of the cat if it isn't overheating? Could the fact that it was mounted vertically (instead of the traditional flat way) in between the frame rail and transfer case be an issue? Of course the cat's...

    Overheating cat with upgraded exhaust

[What makes you think you're overheating your cat?] The muffler shop that installed it thinks the cat is overheating. He noted the discoloration (pink/purplish marks) and subtle ticking noise coming from the cat while idling. He also said the temp in should be higher than the temp going out...

    Overheating cat with upgraded exhaust

So I went and upgraded my 89 FJ62 exhaust system to a single cat with 2" dual inlets and a 2 1/2" single outlet. 2" down pipes welded to the stock pipes coming from the headers with new 02 sensors close to stock placement. 2 1/2" pipe cat back to a magnaflow. Here's my concern, the exhaust...

Passing Smog with a FJ62 exhaust upgrade

Thanks David for the feedback. Did you notice any performance difference between the single cat and 2 cats?

Passing Smog with a FJ62 exhaust upgrade

So I've been thinking about upgrading my 89 FJ62 to a single hi-flow cat with 2.5" pipes straight back to a freeflowing muffler. My local muffler shop says the single cat will be placed too far from the 02 sensors and I will likely not pass smog. I also asked him about upgrading to 2" down...
