^^^ that's the right answer. When you remove the flange you're removing all Pinion preload, and that impacts backlash because the Pinion moves inwards.
Factory crush spacer, you gotta be careful reinstalling the companion flange so you don't mess up preload. Same number of turns on the nut...

AFAIK it doesn't matter which way monotube shocks are mounted. Whichever provides the most clearance.
In theory they're best mounted with the tubes up so crud doesn't build up against the exterior shaft seal, but eh.
Check out psc motorsports. That's an o-ring pressure fitting, so you just need to measure the diameter and psc will have the adapter you need most likely.
